Dry eyes and eye drops

Posted , 5 users are following.

hi EVERYONE im new to this group and have been suffering from dry eyes for years. RECENTLY I WENT FOR A BLOOD TEST FOR sjorgrens and it came back negative.

i have now started RESTASIS a drug which acts on the immune system to activate the glands which produce tears. i have only been using the eye drops for three days and would like to hear from people who have had success with this drug or not! Apparently results are not improved for a few months so i need to persevere for a while.

HI I tested negative for it in all of my blood tests, until I requested a lip biopsy. Thats when it came back positive i use Restasis. IT helps temporarily and can be cool and soothing on my eyeballs. I cabt tell a big difference, but my doctor can always tell when Im not using it regularly. IS anyone having problems typing messages from your phone? Everything is manual and it capitalizes every word and doesnt punctuate automatically I NOTICE Its frustrating

      Hi Oly

Thanks for replying and being so helpful. i am going to give the Restasis six months max and then go back to regular drops. The Restasis is supposed to work on the immune system to try to get the glands which produce tears to function normally and i believe it cantake up to six months. i will have another Shirms test to see just how dry my eyes are in four months and take it from there ?The expense is enormous here in AUSTRALIA! Well over $60 per month and i just cant afford it!

I used Restasis for more than 10 years and, although it did help with my dry eyes significantly, it wasn't real effective during a flare. After moving to Florida and changing eye doctors, my new eye doctor suggested that I try HydroEyes. It's a natural supplement that has fish oil in it along with several other ingredients. You can order it online through Amazon or directly from the company.

Within two weeks, my eyes felt 100% better and I eventually went off the Restasis. That was three years ago, and I'm still using the HydroEyes. I do use a drop of Systane (no preservatives) in each eye each morning, but nothing else other than the HydroEyes. It is great.

One other thing the eye doctor prescribed also was warm compresses on my eyes. I bought a set which is basically like goggles that have two sponges and two gel packs. You kind of snap the gel pack which opens up the heat from it, soak the sponges in warm water and place one in each of the goggles, then place on your eyes until they start to cool (about ten minutes.) That helped too, especially while I was waiting for the HydroEyes to start working.

I don't think I'll ever go back to using Restasis. I hope this info helps you.

i cant thank you enough for helping me with this issue! I have only just started using Restasis and have six months supply and so will keep on it until after CHRISTMAS but definitely will look at Amazon for Hydro eyes!

i live in Australia so not sure if the goggles are available here but will search for those too.

You have been most helpful and i really appreciate you taking the time to answer.

I use vita pos gel overnight. Clean lids and leashes with wet wipes first thing in morning. Then visco tears once to get the remaining gel out. Then hylo forte during the day. Hourly if they are bad, just a few times if they are good.....

Hello I also have been tested and was negative I have opted to not have the lip biopsy done. My eye doctor started me out on Restasis many years ago and I used it for several years. But my eyes have gotten worse. The Restasis felt good after the burning stopped and worked for a while but then I began to get the rock in my eyes again and the rocks became boulders. I have to scrape my eyelids to be able to open and see. I am no longer on Restasis but now use Major Preservative Free Lubricating Plus eye drops about four or more times a day. This works pretty well. I also buy saline flush which I use in the morning to wash out my eyes. So far I do not have any damage (all thanks be to God). My Rhuemotologist also put me on Cevimelime and believe it or not even with my eyes being so bad as they are this drug has helped with the dry nose and mouth. I know you said that you live in Australia but you can order these eye drops online. I was having to order the drops for a while because the VA was not giving me enough. My Rhuemotologist thought that was unnecessary and ordered more per day. I also for a while and will probably go back to using this at night for bedtime. It is a gel and takes a bit of getting used to, I only use it at night because it is expensive. Thera tears nighttime dry eye therapy lubricant eye gel. I hope all this helps. Good luck and God Bless

I'm also in Australia and have secondary sjogren's.

My optometrist suggested using HyloForte drops and it has been fantastic. It costs around $30 and has a 'once opened' shelf life of 6mths.
