Dry Flaky skin on legs after hip replacement op

Had a total hip replacement op on 7th Dec 2017 and now 3 weeks later I've noticed that the skin on both legs is flaking off. My bed sheets are covered each morning. It's not itchy just unsightly. I've been exfoliating and using a moiturising cream, drinking extra water. Is this common ? Has anyone else had this? What causes it? How can I get rid of it ? I am a 52 year old woman and in good health (apart from hip op)Thank you in advance.

I had it. Worse on my right leg than the left (the operated one) due to another injury. It's caused by the swelling which stretches the skin. Unless it breaks the skin, which is very rare, then it is just unsightly and incovenient, and will go away when the swelling reduces. I have very bad swelling in the right leg which will remain until ankle surgery, but I was shocked at how much the left one had swollen even before the surgery, from the artritis/ osteonecrosis in the hip. It obviously got bigger over time and I didn't notice, but I now find that some of my shoes are loose on the left foot!

Thanks Beth , strange thing is I've not had much swelling and why now after three weeks ? Like you said hopefully it will go away soon.

I've had it as well, but only on my operated leg. Not sure what to do about it other than moisturizer and keeping hydrated. I was wondering if it was something they used on my skin during surgery to sanitize? If you watch the surgery being done you will see that your leg is completely cleansed and a Betadine substance remains on your leg until they are finished. I never had any swelling after surgery so I wouldn't think it was due to that.

I had it as well.  Didn't have any swelling!  I think it was from the hibaclens I had to wash with twice before my surgery.  And then stocking they put on probably didn't help. I just kept putting a good lotion and it went away.

Hi many I had my op on left hip a week before you and same with me flaking both legs. Think it's minor and will stop. Worse when I wear jeans and legs rub. Moisturising and hydrating .

Hi, yeah I had flaky legs too a couple of weeks after surgery. Had tendonitis and muscle issues in non-operated leg and both were swollen. Flaky skin went away as swelling went down. I'm 54. ?

Hi Mandy, I think it is because of the compression stockings as well as iodine/hibiscrub.

Mine was awful, as you say it was just like shedding skin.  I used emollient and moisturisers but the one cream that cured it, I found in Tesco's, it is Garnier deep moisturising cream, rehydrated skin so much better than others. Put it on morning and evening. Had a similar problem recently after having a foot op, where iodine was used and foot bandaged up for two weeks. I used exfoillient brush on foot then the cream. within two days skin was back to normal. Good luck.

Yes, I had flaky skin too...I thought that maybe it was because I couldn't moisturise my legs so easily. (because of not being able to bend.) It gradually improves, keep on slapping on the cream, good luck!
