Dry mouth when sleeping on my back

Posted , 10 users are following.

After my hip replacement op 4 weeks ago I've been following the instructions to sleep on my back with a pillow between my legs. It's not been too bad, but I wake in the night with a very dry mouth. I probably fall asleep with my mouth open. Can anyone suggest a remedy?  I expect there's something simple - if only I'd thought of it!

Same here. I put a large v pillow down the my side, the one away from hubby, I was then able to have a side pillow and my head was slightly turned to the side when I fell asleep. Mouth less dry. Also had a glass of water by the bed

I had a dry mouth also, but I think mine is from taking the pain killers or sleeping pills.  After I stopped them but still sleeping on my back, I'm ok.  But if I have had a hard long day and take a pain pill or a sleep pill I notice I have to get up to go potty and then I also wake up with a dry mouth.  I also have water by the bed which helps.

    Good morning Mary  ...

Like Connie, I think mine is medication related too ... I don't sleep on my back but on my side with a pillow between my knees, which helps - I do snore though and apparently loudly cheesygrin -- more of a back in the throat ache - well, at least we get some sleep, right?      take care and have a wonderful day

Thanks for all the helpful replies.I thought about boiled sweets but worried about choking on one if I fell asleep with it in my mouth.

Yes, I do have water available.  I find it is easier to have it in a water bottle of the kind used by cyclists rather than a glass and jug. Easier to reach in the dark and less liable to get knocked over. I can just grab the bottle and swig from it - though I can't manage the pulling-the-top-with-my-teeth like some cyclists can!

    Hi Mary

it seems that every where has different ways, in the booklet the hospital sent me before the op said that I would have to sleep on my back as I have disk probs so sleeping on my back is almost imposible, so you can imagine my relief when I came to in recovery they told that I could sleep on my op side even thou that side had a a THR I am now 9 weeks and besides my left hip which is also booked for a THR everything is fine, can not help with dry mouth as if I sleep on my left side I tend to sleep with my mouth open and like you I am awakened with a dry mouth

    Good luck  Ron

Exactly the same here......third time I have sat up to have a rinse round with a glass of water...feels as though my tongue is made of sandpaper...I think perhaps it is the painkillers, or possibly the nightly injection of anti-DVT medication? I look forward to being able to curl up and sleep on my side! Early days......biggrin
