Dual motor riser/recliner and Elephant legs. NEED ADVICE QUICKLY PLEASE

Hi,

I'm going in for my op on Thursday and wonder if a riser recliner would be good to both get up from (sofa a bit of a struggle as low) and sleep on. I sleep well on my side normally but won't be able to do this once i come home again. The type I mean takes you right up high as well as tip you out - well almost haha.

And I've bought some elephant feet from Amazon to raise up my sofa as it's a bit low and slouchy ( I've heard nothing from the occupational therapist who is supposed to come to your home although I have already handed over the measurements to pre assessment nurse). These blocks raise up your sofa/bed to about another 6 inches or so.

I would really appreciate your views on these two things as Im off on Thursday. Thank you again for all your invaluable help so far.

Sarah

I think it’s really bad that ot haven’t been in touch especially when you are on your own. I had to measure stuff, and then a company brought elephant feet and raised up the sofa and the bed, and fitted raised toilet seats, and also gave me a perching chair. I didn’t gave a recliner. Sleeping was a bit rubbish, but I stuck with my bed. Getting up from the sofa was ok, used my crutches to stand up. Whereabouts in the uk are you?

Yes I think it's terrible too. That's why I keep asking all these questions. I rang the OT dept. twice but no one has ever got back to me. I told them I lived on my own as well.

You mentioned giving your measurements at your pre op, so hopefully they are going to sort stuff out for you. I wish you all the best, Judith

Yes but if they come whilst I’m in hospital how can they get access? The person whose name I gave at pre op had to go with his wife to chemo. He can’t come over to let her in at the drop of a hat. There’s no answer at the moment. I’ll just have to wait and see what’s what. Thanks for your help smile

Hi Sarah. I had my trhr about 4 months ago . I, too, bought a lift and tilt recliner but have never used the tilt bit( but like an ejector seat) but slept in it from first day back from hospital . It was wonderful and I knew I would not be able to turn onto my side during the night. Slept really well and have only just started sleeping back in bed.

Didn’t have any ‘elephant feet’ as I only sat in recliner. Best wishes for your op. X

Hi Sarah, answered your post without reading everything.

I , too, live on my own in Kent and had no help from OT. I phone before op and was told hospital needed to phone them when I was being discharged. Still no one turned up, even the carers I should have had.

After a month I phoned social services and had a bit of a moan. Manager very apologetic and I told her I needed an electric bath seat as I could get into bath. They delivered that next day!

One piece of equipment I would highly recommend is a trolley. At least then you can use it as a walker and put drinks or meals on it to get from A to B. X

Hi Carol, poor you I’m so sorry you were so let down like that. I guess that’s going to be my fate too. I’ve also got a condition called Peripheral Neuropathy - I’m not diabetic though - so walking is weird anyway as the sensations in my feet aren’t very good ( nerve damage).

I’ve got a rollator with a seat and basket thing under the lid. So that should help carry a tray with food on it hopefully as those wheeled tray things are £90 or so here in the mobility shop.

How are you coping now? I hope the pain you had before your op is no more, it’s the most agonising pain ever isn’t it!

Hi Sarah. I hope you’re all ready for your surgery. I’m sure you’ll notice a great change. Waking up without pain is such a blessing.

Try not stress too much about living and coping on your own. I’m sure you’ve made sure you’ve got things in place so that you can rest for as long as you need. Keep me informed with your progress. X

I hope you got that riser/recliner.  My mother had one and it was invaluable!  I did not and wish I had but we have no more room for more furniture.  I made do and still spend most of my days in a regular over stuffed chair or my bed. Total pampering.  Good luck with THR surgery!
