Hi trinny loads of empathy to you. What are you having done? Just the bunion or hammer toe as well? I am due to have an op this week and know how scary it all seems

Hi I'm 11 weeks post op I had the osteotomy of foot and big toe, I wasn't given crutches whereas others were I had post op shoe some have walking boot, you'll find everyone had similar ops but different surgeons give different post op advice this place is great for help and advice, first I'd say plan ahead for meals etc have things in to keep you occupied while your having to rest with foot elevated, lots of ice, pain wise for me was worse first 36 hours after block wore off (I was awake during op) any pain I've had since has been manageable with pain relief, I have been back to the gym but only on cycle as weight bearing caused aches around bunion area, I'm now back on full shifts of 13 hours on a hospital ward so on my feet, I still get slight swelling shoes can be a pain to fit still but once yr dressings are off you'll notice your skin very dry, massaging helps with pain, scar tissue and dry skin bio oil and e45 type creams are good for this. Listen to your body it tells you when you've overdone it. I also invested in a limbo ( a waterproof aid that enabled me to put over foot) this came up to my knee and I was able to shower as I out a plastic stool underneath to sit on. You do get a lot of funny sensations like pressure, nerve twitches etc but I've been assured this was all normal healing, I'm impatient and did expect to be back to normal before now so for me that's been worst bit but it hasn't put me off having other foot done end of year, good luck with yr op and yr recovery have lots of help a foot stool ice and elevate foot in bed too, my surgeons very happy with my results as although big toe still won't bend loads ( enabling me to put slight heels on) I have got very good movement) mine was done by a podiatrist and I live in UK. Good luck and sorry for long post smile

I read these post with interest and grateful to all who give their experiences after the operation.  .

I am on the waiting list for a podiatrist to do my operation.  Out of interest, as you work in a hospital, was there any particular reason why you chose a podiatrist over an orthopedic surgeon with foot and ankle experience?

No reason I was referred to him via my gp my guess was his waiting times were shorter and if I'd wanted ga I'd have probably been refered back to an ortho, or if I'd requested it but I was happy with my initial consultation and lot of my colleagues are impressed with my recovery and results too I had no one to compare with but it is handy having physios and Drs close by should I require advice smile someone did point out to me though not to be impatient as it is after all where we carry all our weight so our poor feet take it all, also Paula Radcliffe had hers done and she ran marathons after her recovery so it can be done smile not that I'm planning a marathon lol xx I'd say good luck to anyone who has surgery coming up I'm pleased I had mine done just remember to rest ice and elevate xxx
