Due to have UAE

I'm a 51 year old with two large fibroids 9 and 10cm diameter . The latter causes me bladder blockage and have suffered with UTis  for over two years until diagnosis of fibroids after ultrasound and MRI. I was offered hysterachtomy but decided to go for a second opinion and have now been offered UAE. I'm due to have treatment tmrw and thought I would document my experience here for others that might be in a similar position. I've never really had the heavy flows that others experiene until recently bleeding for 3/4 weeks but I'm pretty sure this is due to peri menopause symptoms. I do have to self cathetize now as the fibroid has grown rapidly and completely block my uretha. I'm hoping that the fibroids will shrink enough to cease my symtoms and then as I'm  about to hit menaupuse might shrink naturally after. I do have an extended uterous of a 22 week pregnancy so hoping that will eventually go down to. The other fibroid is penduculated and is not being treated so will see how I go. I've found reading some of these posts has given me courage to make this decision withou evasive surgery thank you. Will post update on recovery soon

Hi Annie, I just turned 52, and have a similar case of 9x11 fibroid. I also didn't have heavy period flow, but it lasted for almost a month with one week heavy period and the rest of the month I have a period but it is not heavy. I am quite slim, but all of a sudden I gained about 5kg and I looked like a 4 months pregnant woman. I was referred to a gynaecologist and unfortunately she was so unpleasant. She told me that the fibroid had nothing to do with the weight nor my bally. She told me that I am fat and old! I went home very down and very depressed! So I started following this group. I asked my GP to refer me to another hospital; so while waiting I decided to take Esmya which she prescribed until I do the UAE which gladly she doesn't do and will do it with someone else. I have been taking Esmya for the past month now I am almost done with one box. I also turned vegan and reduced the amount of alcohol I used have, I was never a big drinker but I liked my one glass of wine every day. So now I only have one glass once a week or 10 days. I also started enjoying my vegan food and invent some good recopies, I lost 5 kg so far which is great. My stomach has reduced a lot. I still have a small bally but it is not bad. I think my fibroid has shrunk as I used to feel it with my hand. I also at the beginning had the black strap molasses and apple cider vinegar, I tried it for a week but it was not easy to swallow. I was so bloated as well. So I stopped! Good luck with your treatment and I will keep you posted too.

Hi Farida, don't be down. I think some consultants can be damn right rude. The specialist I saw at kings London was dismissive with my questions and said a hyst was the best thing. Until I found out they had to use up a budget on yearly operations!!! .... Good news that you are changing diet I tried that too ACV, dim for three months but it did not work for me.. Keep me posted on your progress and good luck stay positive. Xx

Thank you Annie, the doctor was trying to convince me that the best thing was hyst, but it is such a major operation and fibroids shrink afte menopose which is my age for it too. I will keep you posted, all the best x

Hi there! I had a ufe procedure on Tues 31/5/16. Only a few days into recovery so cannot comment on long term results. But with 2 ginormous fibroids (the radiologists words) something needed to be done. I am 42, no kids. I was told recovery was brutal, pain wise, and thought I was ready for it. Believe me, it took my breath away and was extremely painful immediately post op. Each day is showing a small improvement. Am going to attempt to leave the house later, but one step at a time! I would advise clearing your diary post op, and listen to your body. Very very good luck!!

Hi I can sympathise as I had constant UTIs with my fibroids and found alcohol a particular irritant. I had to drink plenty of water to flush my bladder out and my periods were heavy plus my belly was quite bloated. I wasnt offered the same procedure and had a hysterectomy due to other symptoms. It solved the uti problems, the heavy bleeding as I had everything removed and my belly has reduced slightly. But it has sped up my menopausal symptoms and advanced my Vaginal Atrophy which has also led to ongoing problems. It does seem to be all swings and roundabouts as you get older whatever treatment you have. I hope your op is more successful and it solves your symptoms :-)

Thanks Tracy, you are right about getting older and swings and roundabouts...it's not easy but we carry on regardless. Good luck with your recovery and thanks for sharing your story. X

    Hi,

I'm 52 and had my hysterectomy on 25 May.  I had been suffering with heavy bleeding, clots etc for 2.5 years.  I was due to have hysterectomy last June but my periods stopped last April and gp wanted me to have another scan to see what was going on.  Well, my 7cm fibroid had shrunk to 4cm and was degenerating so op was cancelled.  Then in October I started bleeding again, very heavily and couldn't leave the house.  Dr put me on Norethisterone to stop the bleeding which it did, but not completely.  In February this year I went into urine retention and spent 5 days in hospital.  Another scan revealed fibroid was sitting on the bladder!  Had to self cath, but couldn't get on with it so had catheter.  Op booked for 25 May, all went well apart from surgeon cutting bladder, so am on a catheter again!!

I asked to see the fibroid that was causing all my problems and was shocked to see it was more cantaloupe melon than an orange as was originally told!!!

I wish you all the best with your procedure xx

Dear Toni, hope you feel better soon, it is a big operation, but a lot of my friends who did it say that after the recovery they are very happy. The recovery differs from one to another. All the best x

      Hi Toni,

Thanks for your sharing your experience it's so comforting to hear other women's stories. Self cathetization was not easy at first but I persisted and eventually found a way to mange it. It does effect your life though as not something that can be done easily when having to use public places. Sorry to hear you are still having bladder issues I use a brand by Braun called mini screen they are discreet and easy to use. Hope recovery improves and thanks again for sharing x

Just a quick question, I've been taken green tea extract tablets for about two months now as have read a study on 3 months daily use can shrink fibroids. Have been getting a few pangs of slight contraction now and then am

Wondering if my fibroid is also starting to degenerate ? Did you have any feelings when it was shrinking? I've not had any symptom improval

In last two months but not sure how degeneration should feel? It might even be growing still! 😞

      Hi Farida,

Thank you, yes it is a big op but I think the worst for me was the waiting, the worry beforehand etc.  I feel better already knowing that monster is not inside me anymore!!  Now I just have to recover properly!

      Best wishes,

      Toni xx

Hi Annie best of luck with the procedure, I hope it eases your symptoms soon. For me Esmya has worked to shrink the fibroids, but nothing seems to stop them growing again! Let us know how it goes, have heard of positive results.

Thanks Christine, great news that Esmya has worked for you thats

very positive to hear. I will defo keep you all posted as everyone's experience is so different. I wasn't offers Esmya as don't think I meet conditions of heavy blood loss. But I'd be interested to try if it also shrinks fibroids. Thanks again x

Yes it definitely shrinks the fibroids, not just stops the bleeding. In fact I bled ( not heavily) for quite a while during the Esmya courses - I've had 3 now, I believe the bleeding gradually eases BECAUSE the fibroids are shrinking. BTW I am 58, and menopause never kicked in like I hoped, still hasn't.

Lucky you, woman after my heart, feel young, look young. Thats encouraging to hear about the Esmya but they are a bit cash strapped in Uk to prescribe it too often..are you from the US?

No, I am from UK but live in Spain, I have private health care but anything related to fibroids is not covered, so I have to buy them and yes they are expensive, but not as expensive as a hysterectomy!
