Dull ache in rectum

Posted , 8 users are following.

I have  suffered from IBS since I was 20, I am now 64. When I get an attack it can last for weeks then disappears for a few weeks or months. I am having a dull ache in my rectum mostly when I am sitting, no pain or discomfort when having a bowel movement, I have experienced this in the past and it eventually disappears after a few weeks. I suffer from anxiety which causes flare ups, this one seems to be going on for ever. Does anyone else experience this discomfort? Thank you in advance.

I get a dull stomach ache and constipation with IBS.  If I have a flare up I get nausea and agonising pain.  Sometimes, my stools are loose if I get very anxious.  I can get back and leg pain as well.  I don't get rectum discomfort. However, everyone is different.

      Hi,

I also get pains in lower back and waist line and top of legs, this worries me, do you think it's ibs related or down to health anxiety?

I'm going back doctors Tuesday and going to ask for scan or something on back and hips.

I find it hard to believe that ibs and health anxiety could be causing such discomfort.

What are the pains in your legs like? Is it just legs and back?

      Cheers

Part of the bowel wraps round the back and is also close to your hips and tops of your legs.  This is why you can get pain in these areas.  This is part of IBS and anxiety makes the pain worse.  Before diagnosis, I was consumed with panic because 7 doctors couldn't help me.  My pain and anxiety only eased after diagnosis.

However the pain is never in one place for any length of time.  It can be dull, stabbing, grinding or neuralgic. It can move from left to right, right to left or in the middle of the stomach or across the whole of the stomach. I have felt it around the waist and a dull ache on the tops of my legs.  However, I don't get all of these pains at the same time.

Thank you for the info, very useful.

Need to train my mind to stop over thinking about it, any thing you find helps with your ibs and related pains?

      Thanks again

Usually I can ignore the pain without medication if I am relaxed and doing more exercise.  I like writing poems and listening to music.  If I have a flare up, Buscopan and painkillers help.

Diane ,go look up Pudental Neuralgia ,I've got IBS ,I get the same Prob as yourself . Painful sitting and standing for long periods . Pressure there . Try watching what you eat ,I find certain foods can flare it up and make it worse, took me 10yrs to know what the cause of it  and name it , even though I had my suspicions ,but no Dr took heed of what I was describing . Left me to deal with it .

I have just looked this up, thanks Marlene I started cycling to keep fit and the symptoms are all fitting for PN . i also have ibs and diverticular problem. The GP doctors dont help even when presented with all the gathered info. They say you shouldnt google but it can be frustrating when you get no answers.

I would describe mine as more of a pain in my back passage immediately after opening my bowels.  I think I probably have ibs and also I have been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia.

Im had my gallbladder removed last year due to gallstones.

To be honest with you, I think this is all just part of getting older!!

Take care and keep in touch

im so glad to see your post I have just developed these symptoms too. I too have had ibs since young and now 58 it is getting worse. i also got diagnosed with the very start of diverticular disease just prior to pandemic. Didnt even know i had it

I have been getting a dull ache high up in my back passage, too high to be haemorrhoids. The ache radiates in the left side of my body mostly. It radiates down my left buttock and both thighs at the back. Not sure what triggers it but maybe spices? It is very annoying ache. And when you dont know what you're dealing with it can cause anxiety. Meds dont work, i wonder if it is a nerve related ache? Any help with this psin management or even prevention would be useful
