Dull arthritic pain after stopping allopurinol

Hi All,

I hope you can give some insight. 5 Years ago i was diagnosed with Gout. I wish I had seen a specialist at the time as I was told by the GP to start taking allopurinol to decrease my uric levels instead of trying to at-least do it naturally first. I'm now 34 and want to get off the medication. Through out the 5 years time I haven't been consistent and the last time I was on it was for 3months but was still getting flares every week. Whenever I come off it I stop getting the flares (I know flares are suppose to be happening on the med as they are dissolving the crystals but. I really get myself off the meds. I went to a specialist and he told me that I was probably mis diagnosed since i never got it on my toe and on the archilles area. And its really hard to tell if I actually do have "Gout" Unless they stick a needle in the inflamed site to see if there are crystals. I currently now am off the meds a per the specialist doctor and have not had a flare up in 3 months, however i still get dull pains on the underside of my right foot, and is quite tingly in the morning, i feel like a circulation issue, has this happened to anyone else? I hear that if you have 3 or more "flares" you should be on allopurinol? But since these are dull and not sharp "flare" where I can not walk is this the result of coming off allopurinol?

Any insight or experience would be great.

"No flare in three months" can still leave some lingering damage and soreness, I'd say.  Have you had blood tests of your uric acid levels, before and after being on allopurinol?  Anyway, look into celery, celery seed, and 3nb.  Seems to work for me.  Of course still watching diet, too.

You have blood circulation issue. Gout does not give tingling feet. Hank

Hi, I also used to get mild flare ups of gout which usually peaked for 1 day at it worst where I was unable to walk but then cleared up after 4-5 days. Once actually diagnosed with gout my consultant prescribed me allopurinol which made things 10 times worse. I suffered an immediate gout attack after taking it and was unable to walk for days due to foot and ankle pains. The discomfort remained for 5-6 weeks and affected everything I did. My doctor then told me to stop taking allopurinol and instead try colchicine. I’ve taken it for the last 4 days and now feel great, although my ankle is still swollen. My view is that allopurinol didn’t work for me as it put me in a worse position than I was before. I would rather suffer occasional gout flare ups which are manageable instead of taking allopurinol and being left with permanent pains.

Hi, surprising how many people on here have a bad time on Allopurinol and it supposidly being the best tablet. The dull ache could still be a result of taking Allopurinol, as when i was on Allopurinol i had really bad dull ache pain in most of my joints and had to stop taking them. I have circulation problems in my right foot due to nerve damage from a prolapsed disc many years ago and i do not get the tingling sensation and dull ache you speak of. If you had high uric acid levels in your blood then the pain is still likely to be gout symptoms. Adenuric is another tablet for gout which suits me a lot better and may help you. My first attack of gout was in my left big toe and was that painful even a slight breeze on the area would be unbearable. I also take Adenuric which seem to be much better than Allopurinol and have had no flares since being on this tablet.
