Hello Tammie, Well, I hope you soon recover. No wonder you were sent to the emergency dept. In 1994 I contracted Pneumaccocal Meningtis through Otitis Media. The mucus that sat in my blocked ears (ETD) turned bacterial, crossing the blood brain barrier, losing the sight in my left eye and hearing in my right ear, also vertigo at times. I'm glad you've been protected from this having taking lots of antibiotics. I still suffer ETD to this day and it's one of the most awful conditions to suffer. I too have Rhinitis and suffer allergies, that's what I put my ETD down to. Every other year or two I simply have to request Prednisolone Steroid tablets to get rid of the inflammation and dry up all the mucus. I have a 20 day reducing course. No ENT consultant really wants to prescribe this drug, however, when mine gets really bad I need some relief, no matter how short. This time it's lasting 3 months. I've had a couple of hiccups where my left ear has still become blocked, but I was able to pop it. I take a daily Citrizine antihistamine and Flixonase Aqueous Steroid Nasal spray....all of which help to some extent. I never get earache from my blocked ears, however, I did prior to it turning to meningitis. I do hear crackling and buzzing if they are blocked. So many of us suffer this complaint on this Forum and you'd think there would be a cure. A part from grommets (tubes) put into your eardrums to enable drainage, or balloon dialation, there is nothing else that will help....not even sure if those two procedures are permanent.
So get yourself on a antihistamine until your appointment comes through to see if they wll help. Also try inhalations, with a towel over your head.
Kind regards
Anne

Morning, no my ear doesn't clear while in bed. Usually, it's worse as mucus drains into the eustachian tubes overnight. No mucus can drain going down the throat unless it's very thin, usually very thick and sticky. You need a perforation in the eardrum to allow drainage that way. I can go to bed without ears being blocked and get up in the mornings and they are. Post nasal drip may cause it....horrible condition !!
