Ear Infection With So Much Pain

Hello, I have been struggling with an ear infection for about a week now and I am in tears. The pain is unbearable!!!!! I need help but I've gotten 2 different diagnoses both of which haven't helped at all. My ear canal as well as ear drum are in a whole lot of pain. Along with the outside of my ear which radiates down to my neck and even inside my throat I can feel the pain. The first the first doctor said i have a middle ear infection. He gave me oral antibiotics and told me to take aleve for the pain. And to expect some discharge from the ear. Over night and during the day there was a small amount of pus just kinda seping from my ear but no real relief as if it had ruptured. Two days later the pain was continuing to get worse and I was ready to kill myself because nothing was helping. I got a second opinion and he said I have an outter ear infection, not a middle. He gave my antibiotic ear drops and norco for the pain. I used the ear drops the night and when I stood up after 4 minutes of letting the ear drops sit in my ear the pain got worse. So so much worse which I didn't even think was possible cause I was already crying it was so bad. I took a norco but it's not doing anything. I haven't been able to sleep and once again I'm in agony. Some please help!!! I have a theory that I have both a middle and a outer ear infection. I think that my eardrum in perforated which would account for the pus and a little bit of blood. And then I think the ear drop are getting into that perforation and causing the pain. Is this possible? I need answers because I can't take this??

Hi Riley, yes it is possible to have both. If you have an emergency department, go and see an ENT there. During the day is better as there is more chance of an ENT being on site. For the pain take the strongest nurofen and panadol at the same time. Unless you are on medication that is contra indicated for these, it should help with the pain. There is little pain that is as severe as ear pain. I feel so sorry for you. If you don't want to go to emergency, phone your GP and ask for an urgent ENT referral then phone around to the local ENTs to see who will fit you in on the day. You don't want to wait and most of them will see you immediately if they know how severe your pain is and that you have been seen by two GPs. Good luck!!! xx

Are you under an ENT? If you are do they perform balloon dilation?
