Ear problems

I have had a problem with my ear forever now. At least a year. I've been to the dOctober for it multiple times but everytime they said it's good.

I always feel stuffy and I can always hear like a heat beat in it. Ithe kinda feels like there is ear wax but the doctors always say it's perfect. It bothers me.

    Hi Miranda

I get this too. Constant I can hear my heart beating perfectly in my left ear. And sometimes my whole head thumps to the sound. I saw an ENT specialist and he wasn't worried about it my hearing was fine. I also requested and MRI to ease my mind cause I think it's something bad. Hopefully, we can get some answers soon as it drives me nuts and freaks me out

I have that feeling in my ears and I was told by a doctor that I have fluid in my ears that's the cause of the thumping and I have Eustachian Tube Dysfunction in both ears. I'm not sure if every doctor is able to tell if there's fluid in the ear. I went to one doctor and they told me my ears were okay and then I went to another and she told me there was fluid in my ears. I've had this issue for almost two months now thumping like a heart beat and clogged ears that feel like ear wax and then I got a ringing in the ears issue added to it. I have to go for a hearing test in a couple of weeks and then the ENT. After using Flonase, Zyrtec and Sudafed PE the only thing that has gotten somewhat better is the thumping (heart beat sound) now it sounds like bubbles.

I forgot to put this in my other post but I was also told that it's all caused by allergies that I never new I had until this happened. I guess it can happen all of a sudden one day out of nowhere from what my doctor told me.

I do suffer with seasonal allergies Linda and I never in 35 years of my life had these symptoms. The ent specialist didn't say if I had liquid in my ears. And my family dr. Said my ears inside are good. Oh I don't know. I want all this thumping to go away I'm convinced it's something bad. Dr. Google freaked me out

    Hi Miranda,

I had a very similar experience.  I found a good ENT and was diagnosed with Superior Canal Dehiscence.  There are likely other conditions that might explain your symptoms.  However, your description is very similar to what I described to my Dr.

For me, I felt a fullness in my ear like there was water/wax inside.  However, my hearing tests came back normal.  I can also hear my heartbeat especially when going to sleep.  There are quite few other symptoms for this condition and each person seems to have a different mix.  Can you hear your voice more loudly when you speak in your problem ear?  Can you hear your eyes move or blink?  Do you have an unsteady type of dizziness?  These are other common symptoms.   Let me know if you want to disucss further after looking up the symtpoms.

      Hello...

Alot of these symptoms aren't exactly what I have. I have talked to my doctor and he mentioned this, but is pretty sure it's not this because I'm not dizzy, etc. Thanks for your help!

I have this symptoms I can't hear my voice louder etc. but not dizzy. In the event it is what you have how do you correct it???

      Hi Miranda,

Your Dr may very well be correct. This is a rare condition.  However, based on my research I can say that not all people with this condition have dizziness.  There are diagnostic tests that can be performed to check for this condition unlike many other vestibular conditions which are diagnosed just on patient history.  Since you have had symptoms for quite a while. You might consider whether it is worth having the tests to rule out this condition.

      Hi Maryann0705,

There are a couple of conditions where you might hear your vioce more loudly that I am aware of.  Superior Canal Dehiscence (SCDS) and patulous eustachian tubes (PET).  Both of these are rare condition.  For SCDS, there is a solution but it is a surgery that is typically reserved for people with severe symptoms.  I also hear my voice loud and distorted when I speak, which is very frustrating.

If they don't think is severe it sure is to me. I'm convinced it's a tumor or something. My whole head is thumping right now and it hurts. How did this happen?? What other test can I do??? I have an MRI scheduled for December 05. Not sure if I can wait any longer.

      Hi Maryann,

It is probably good to have the MRI to rule out conditions that are potentially dangerous.  However, most Vestibular conditions are not dangerous just really annoying.

If you happen to have Superior Canal Dehiscence, it would probably not show up on an MRI test.  The main tests for SCDS are a special high resoution CT scan of the temporal bone and a VEMP test.  With Superior Canal Dehiscence, there is a small hole that develops in the bone that sepeates the superior semicircular canal from the brain.  No one really knows why this happens.  But this little hole causes a bunch of symtpoms often including the ability to hear your heart beat.  This hole can let sounds from inside the body into your ear where they can be heard or impact your balance.  The surgery for this condition is to either patch the hole or plug the canal.  The word dehiscence is a fancy medical term for hole. The CT scan provides an image which is used to look for the small hole which might be as small as the head of a pen. Do you  have any other symptoms besides hearing the thumping and your own voice?  Very curious if you can hear any sounds when your eyes move (in a quiet location)?  Do you have any balance related symtpoms?  Really sorry to hear you worrying about this.  When you say it hurts, do you mean headache?
