Early days?

Had my carpal tunnel release op on Mon, 22 Sept on my right, dominant hand - so just over a week ago but am frustrated because the area is still painful and I can't lift anything, push anything, clean my teeth with my affected hand etc.  It is getting better but I thought I would be able to do much more after a week.  Can't drive but I can type!  Also the stitches feel really tight and I've been told they wont be removed until next Wed - that's 16 days after the op.  Seems a long time to have stitches in.  Have other people had them in that long?

Thank you for replying.  I had no idea recovery would take so long.

I had my stitches in for 10 days and was told not to lift anything heavy or push or pull anything heavy for at least 2 months. I went to physical therapy for flexability and strength for 6 weeks. I am now in my 9th month and the nerve pain and numbness are worse. I know this is supposedly not the usual result but I am so sorry that I had the surgery. I could have continued to live with the numbness but now with my fingers feeling like they have been buned and the sudden jolts of pain in my fingers, wrist and arm I just don't know what to do.

Thank you for your reply.  I'm sorry you have had such a bad experience.  I wasn't told it would take so long to recover - it was very much, oh not a big deal - couple of weeks and you'll be fine.

When I had it done I thoght it would be like magic and I would feel wonderful in a very short time. Then I was told 3 months and then 6 months and then that he does 150 a year and maybe 2 don't work. I wouldn't care about don't work but worse than before not right.

I had my stitches in 15 days, I am 6 weeks on and still having pain I didn't realise how long recovery would take. There is light at the end of the tunnel though!

Thanks Abigail.  I think that's the issue - I wasn't told it would take so long either.

Had stitches out on Monday, 14 days after surgery.  Have seen the consultant today, day 16.  Still very painful although it is getting better and I can do more each day.  Was told the nerve had been very badly compressed so it will take a while for the all the nerves to get back to normal.  My hand is still swollen either side of the scar.  Have another appointment in 4 weeks.  Have now been told it could be 4 - 5 months before it is back to normal - wish I'd been told this at the beginning!  Although I do think it would have been better if I hadn't left it so long - the more damaged the nerve is, the longer it's going to take to recover.

Well, six weeks now since my op and saw my consultant today.  Hand is still very painful, swollen and hard round the operation site and very sensitive.  Apparently about 10% of people are affected this way after the op.  I was told it is scar tissue - basically like a lump of cement that has formed in the channel and I will need physio.  Had first session today - ultrasound, massage and vibration and I have been given exercises to do every two hours.  Rolling my hand over a ball, rubbing my hand on my clothes and on different textures.  Need to re-educate the nerves and de-sensitise them.  The physio was hopeful that I would see a marked improvement in 4 - 6 weeks.  Measured my hand strength as well - 50% compared to my good hand.  Will see the physio again next week.

After these 3 years, do you still feel the pain on the site of operation? Is the site of stitches still swelled and tight?

I was seen recently by my surgeon as my hand is similar to yours ie painful lump around area of scar and can't do anything that puts pressure on the area without pain and if I were to press the hand down as I do when canoeing it is excruciating   I now don't canoe.  He has told me I have to live with it and has discharged me. I had the op in July so about 3 months on. Has your physio said it will definately get better as I might see if I can be referred to a physio. When you put weight on that area does it hurt a lot. I hope yours gets resolved very soon. I went back at 7 weeks to see the surgeon with the same symptoms as you and  he told me it was mild pillar pain and bear with it. At least you are getting something done and hopefully it will resolve. I had looked into shock therapy for it but again the surgeon says not appropriate. He was less than helpful!!

Hi Ali, to just dismiss your symptoms is disgraceful.  I would suggest you definitely need physio (and probably a different doctor!)  I started the physio on Wednesday and it has already improved.  I make sure I roll my hand over a plastic bottle or a ball for 5 minutes every two hours and also massage the area.  It is painful and puts your teeth on edge because of the sensitivity but if you can bear with it, it does work.  Maybe start with a couple of minutes.  The area is still hard but I think the area may have reduced and it is not so sensitive.  I asked the physio how long it would take and she said in 4 - 6 weeks she would expect to see a big improvement although it may take 6 months for my hand to be fully healed.  I would urge you to see a hand physio as I'm sure it will make a huge difference.  I wish you all the best in your recovery.
