Early Mobilisation experiences

Attended fracture clinic yesterday 8 weeks after complete tear of the left achilles tendon. Due to complications I've not had any surgery; instead I have had two casts in eight weeks both with the foot in full equinus. The consultant did a calf squeeze test which showed minimal foot movement and sent me home with no cast and instructions to not bear any weight on the leg (keep on the crutches for a month) and to do gentle stretching of my toes so my foot returns to the level.

As much as I appreciate the progress from being in the cast this seems an uncommon treatment for ATR, has anyone else had similar experiences and if so were the results positive??? :?

I had the exact treatment recommendation and it did not work out well at all. I tore my AT and I was on crutches with no weightbearing for 6 weeks them limped around for another 10 weeks. All thru out the Thompson test (calf squeeze) was close to negative. It retore the moment It got aggressive with it. Had surgery and all is well now. Just lost 6 months for nothing just to have surgery anyways

All I can say is be very INFLUENTIAL with your doctor get a MRI or a Ultra sound done to determine the % of tear you have..... NO XRAY as it is too vague.

The rehab for any AT tear is already long but delaying surgery even longer by TRYING non surgical method will make it even more frustrating. My instinct tells me your going to experience the same as me. AT tears - ruptres are very complicated..... Try to visit a sports medine specialist that specializes on AT tears asap,

    Good luck

Thanks for the prompt response, I managed to tear my Achilles playing squash.

Just wondering when you said your tendon ruptured again was this when you returned to sports or just as you recommenced exercise?

I will try and get the ultrasound/ MRI through my Doctor.

    Cheers

    I tore mine Aug 6 2007.

Retore Nov 26 2 days after I was given ok to resume lite non load sports etc. I ran 15 yards and it was like a zipper

Had the ultra sound a week later and it showed surgery should have been done initially...all scar tissue no tendon anyways

    .. a picture is worth a 1000 words,,,,

If you get the MRI as well as a sports medicine specialist.....................your starting off correctly no wait and see ..

    good luck

Some rehab supplements I've taken...... there are about 6 OTC amino acids that aid surgery patients .. tissue repair and collagen syntheses - xlinking (taurine - argiinine - ornithine - glutamine - okg - BCAA Vit C ... herbal Cissus RX)...... I am walking with a slite limp 10 weeks post op (no cast or air boot)
