Early Period on Pill

Hello. I’ve been on the pill for around 4 years, never had an issue, never missed the pill, I have taken them late but only by a few hours. I finished my period around 20th Jan, started taking my pill again on the 22nd two days later my period started again, only light for a couple days, didn’t think anything of it! Until this week. I started spotting on Monday and have been since, today I’m having what seems like a regular period just with hardly any cramps, but I’m not due on for another week! I did take my pill on Sunday a few hours late and slept with my boyfriend that night..is this something I should be worried about? I have booked in with my GP but they can’t see me till next week and I’m worried!! Thanks.

    Hi Lucia,

Are you on the combined pill or the mini pill? Some mini pills only have a 3 hour window from when you're supposed to take it (except for Cerazette and Cerelle which has a 12 hour window)- so if you're missing them regularly by a few hours, there might be a very small cause of concern (but nothing likely)

If you're on the combined pill, you're honestly fine. You can take your next pill up to 24 hours late and still be protected (not that I would make a habit of it of course). We all naturally panic about things, especially when it comes to our contraception failing and becoming pregnant. Just know that even if your contraception wasn't 100% effective at the time (which no contraception is anyway) the chances of you conceiving isn't always high either. Some people try for years to conceive, so we should never just assume that the one time is going to be an "I'm pregnant" incident.

Starting your period late isn't an issue, hormones do weird things to your body even if you've been on them for years, over time your body can decide to have a different response. I had the implant for 8 months then out of nowhere it decided to just make me bleed all the time. It's really nothing I'd be worried about. This really doesn't warrant a GP visit- especially so soon as they likely wouldn't be able to tell you you're pregnant either, they have the same tests available as you can get in the shop, and this is the GP receptionist in me talking but it is a slight waste of a GP visit for someone who could be potentially sick.

Again, if you're on the combined pill- you're fine, this could just be a one off having an early period, if it keeps happening and it bothers you, consider switching brands?

If you're on the mini pill with a 3 hour window and you're missing it on a regular basis (basically daily) then maybe take a test in 3 weeks from the date you had unprotected sex to ease your mind.

If you're on the mini pill with a 12  hour window and you're only missing it by a few hours, seriously don't worry smile

I've been on basically every contraception out there and basically know them inside and out because of the type of anxious person I am I want to know everything about what I'm putting into my body haha I hope this at least eases your mind.
