Early recovery

I am 48 and had a THR 2 weeks ago. I have been going out walking and feel I have possibly pushed myself too far and today feel I have gone backwards and the pain has been worse than it has for days. Can someone reassure me that it isn't pure improvement everyday and set backs are normal? This weekend I will rest more, but am aware I still need to excercise. Any advice?

Hi Pauline! Well done you! But from a fellow hippie please don't over do things! Its not a race! Otherwise you will have a set back! I am just over 7 weeks, and still not there yet,it can take a good while ! I am still bruised! So please take each day as it comes! Regards Amanda

Thank you! I just am finding it hard to gauge how much is too much. I think I will need to step it back over the next few days and chill a bit.

Hello Pauline yes it is difficult to get the balance and I think little and often in the beginning is the answer. I only started walking outside at the end of Wk2 and today at wk 6 I managed 3.5 miles without a rest. Tonight body is complaining a bit. Tomorrow I will rest. I am still using 2 walking poles while out and not ready to drop down to 1. Hope to be support free when I have my 8 wk check but we shall see. Being a keen walker I normally like to take a pole for rough terrain not usually for pavement bashing. If you are normally active it can be difficult to live life in the slow lane, enjoy the leisurely pace as I expect unlike this pensioner you will be going back to work or nay be you are a lady of leisure

It's completely normal to feel like that , you must rest when you are tired . I am 14 weeks post op now and suddenly realised this week that I am feeling great !

    good luck

Thank you that is all very reassuring. I use one stick and have done from day 1- due to a coordination issue I have 2 sticks were just too difficult for me to operate!! this could mean I am less supported and need to go more slowly.

I will ill be returning to work and in my head want to aim to be back by as soon as I can. Again on that front I need to slow down and go day by day.

Hi Pauline , I know just what you mean , a couple of times I have over done things a bit and felt I have gone backwards even at nearly seven weeks . You are only 2 weeks and sound like you are doing fine , we must be quite patient , not always easy though . I had a double hip replacement six plus weeks ago and have days I get really frustrated but then I have a good day . The thing is to rest up if you do have a bad day . I am 50 and just want to get back to normal . I tried to go walking with one crutch tonight but had to go back and get my other . I can go round the house with no crutches but need them outside for a bit still . Dont worry you will be fine , you are young and that is on your side , just remember , rest when you need to , all the best , Ruth

good morning Pauline -- yep, the infamous 2-3 weeks - I remember feeling great and doing way too much at that time - but then the set-back --- then I watched the whole surgery on You Tube - Good Lord, it IS major surgery !!!!  I didn't realize that and have much more respect for my body since - it is healing and repairing and a lot of patience and TLC is required .... this forum is so wonderful - take it easy, love - all is well ....

Don't worry, we all get setbacks from time to time.  Don't try to rush things, go at your own pace not anyone else's.  I found that little and often of everything worked for me, a little rest, a little exercise, a little walk, a little rest and so on.  You will get there.

Oh boy do I remember being at 2 weeks recovery, I'm now going into my 8th week. Like you I was so anxious to get up and moving and back to normal I pushed myself at times and paid the price. Yes and yes set backs are normal. I still have them. Yesterday I finally was able to get a good night's sleep, in my bed yipee, I woke up and my thigh felt pretty good, no stiffness, well the weather was beautiful so I went outside and walked alot, helped my husband with a bit of lawn care and by the end of the day I was in the recliner thinking omg what did I just do to myself. Best advice is don't push to hard, do the exercises if you can withough hurting yourself, give the leg a rest day, ice it, elevate it. Recovery is definately a roller coaster ride. Feel better soon
