Ecchymosis 18 months after tkr

Posted , 10 users are following.

I had a total knee replacement of right knee in January 2014.  In September 2015, a very large dark bruise appeared on my knee cap where the device can be felt.  My knee had not been hit, no falls or other explanation.  The surgeon has no explanation, says he has never seen it before, had another surgeon look at it with same reaction.  He did an xray, then ordered a scan.  Does not suggest surgery because he doen't know what he would be looking for.  Actually I believe him and feel he really has never seen it.  My GP doctor and I have agreed that I wouldn't even think about surgery unless something else arises.  These bruises continue to come and go.  My knee hurts but is not debilitating as much as my overall osteo arthritis.  I just plan to live with it.

My husband says he can't believe no one in the world has ever exprienced this, but  haven't found anyone yet.

Wow Monica, that is just crazy! How wonderful it would be for someone on here to have heard of this. I pray there is an answer that might even have a solution.

Diana, I can see why that might scare you, but considereing how many people are on this forum and also understanding that it's not even something the doctors know what to think of it, I don't know that's reason to decide against surgery. As challenging as the recovery is, I feel pretty confident saying that most of us would do it again. When the pain and inability to walk is great enough, there is so much relif in a TKR.

Thank you Meandered. I just haven't had good luck with any surgery. I'm a grandmother of 3 and two of them are twin boys at 18 months. I need my knee:-(

Yeah, that's strange. Might be weak blood vessels around the area. Do you have your own knee cap? I'd say don't worry about it, and if you can live with it that will be your new normal.

Anne, I do think it as something to do with blood vessels. First thing the doctor asked was if I was taking any blood thinners.  I wasn't taking anything except fish oil.  Quit taking that but nothing changed.  Your advice confirms my thinking.  Thanks so much for your reply.

Look up Castor oil. My therapist said that I could gently rum castor oil on my bruises abs scars. She said that its great for scar tissue. I'm using that now.

    Hi Granmonica,

I have never heard of this, but I am only 10 weeks post op.

I can't believe the surgeon or GP can't come up with an experienced explanation.

Have they said they would research this? Maybe ask colleagues etc. Or oninteret or at conferences they attend.

Maybe OFG here can help, he has a lot of experience.

I'll say a prayer to St Anthony now and he will help find an answer.

    Take care,

    Alan

The surgeon said he would do some research and I see him in July. He is a well respected surgeon.  Strangely enough, I do trust him and believe he is concerned about it.  I'm in Fort Worth, Texas, and haven't found anyone here who has the same problem.   Thanks so much for your prayers.  They do help.  Colleen

You have found someone else now!

My second TKR was last August, and I expected that after the initial swelling and bruising, my knee would be back looking normal, like the other one was.

But no, I have dark brown bruising the full length of th scar, which has healed up raised, almost like a keloid scar.

It has never gone, so I don't think it will now.

I go for my 12 month X-ray in August, and I will ask my consultant then.

But to be honest it doesn't worry me as much as the shin pain I have in that knee, and if I knock it sideways it's really painful and aches right down the front of my leg.

Does anyone else have this pain?.

I'm just hoping it ain't a problem with the implant bedding in.

Sometimes I wonder if we're all just guina pigs for the surgeons.  I also wonder if knee replacement surgery has a long way to go. Hopefully you'll get some relief in August.  Thanks for your reply.

rolleyesHa! Well you just found one. I have a large brushed area just below my PKR knee. No pain or itching. Just there. Even the dermatologist had no explanation. Just went to a new primary and he suggested it may have to do with bruising and blood from surgery. Not so sure. It did show up after OR but it's still there 18 monthes later. Like you, X-rays clear, etc.

It's fortunate that you have no pain.  My hurts, just not excruciating like it was in the beginning.  The really deep dark blue comes and goes, but always hurts some.  There is always a light bruise between times of the dark ones.  Mine didn't show up until about 18 months after surgery.  Thanks for responding.
