Effects on LS from unrelated surgery

Has anyone had any experience of unrelated surgery upsetting their LS symptoms?

I am having knee replacement surgery early next year and am concerned that the trauma may effect my autoimmune balance and consequently cause LS flare. I am aware that I may need to be catheterised when in recovery but am trying to resist that.

I have talked to GP and physiotherapist about this and they have been reassuring but cannot give any definite answers of course.

Hi, we have to be SO aware all the time with this disease don't we. But I can honestly say, my knee and subsequent eye removal operations (I am broken!!), had no repercussions on my LS. No flare up at all. But I was not catheterised for either op. Refused point blank; had frank discussions with Specialist and Anaesthetist both times and my Specialists were aware (I keep banging in about how we are having to be so self-reliant with this auto immune disease).

Am due either/or the other knee / hip replacements in the near future and am hoping that all goes as smoothly as before.

Wishing you well and a speedy recovery.

Patricia, thank you, this is reassuring to hear and I will refuse a catheter for sure. And totally agree that we have to think for ourselves with this disease. Its not something I relish talking about to consuntant and anaesthetist.

So sorry to hear of ops you have had and still face. I wish you the best of luck.

I have never heard of any "replacement surgeries" with LS...do not "think" they r related...as LS is an autoimmune issue and the other is bone...

Vickie - You're right, they are certainly not related. My concern is the upheaval and trauma to the body from any sort of operation bringing on stress which in turn can cause LS to flare. I am hoping if I manage to stay positive, all will be ok. And I certainly don't want a catheter as any interference in that area when at the moment I have my LS reasonably under control, is not welcome.

    Sarb,

While I have not had any regular surgery, I did have small procedure on my eye and then am in the middle of heart diagnostics, with a bad job, and a difficult living situation. They ALL have a negative effect on this disease, I think, if only because our stress hormones like cortisol, adrenalin, and other pituitary outputs that may produce prostaglandins, cytokines and leukotrienes, these last three exacerbate any inflammatory condition one has. May I suggest carrying around a bottle of either vanilla extract or lavender oil or both. They help me relax during trying periods.

    Best wishes,

For me, anything that shifts my immune system's focus actually improves my symptoms. Even if I get a bad cold or stomach virus, my symptoms improve. However, the only surgery I've had was a dental procedure and with that, my symptoms stayed about the same.

stress changes EVERYTHING - makes everything get worse...my opinion is u first need to get your body to the "A GAME"....meaning eat right, no not drink alcohol or smoke, get rest and drink lots of water and exercise ...in other words u need to become a lean, mean machine so your body is at its top game to fight whatever is going on...do not get be wrong u also need to find a doctor that is knowledgeable with vaginal issues...where do u live??

thanks Seggins - I can relate to that and it gives me reassurance.

Vickie, yes agreed, I intend to get as fit as poss before surgery. I am in UK and op is being done on NHS, so I don't hold out much hope of a knee surgeon knowing anything about LS.
