Hi gill
effexar belongs to a group of anti-depressents known as SSNRI,s .. unlike sertaline which is a SSRI effexar not only stops the reuptake of seretonin but also norepinephrine
i was on another SSNRI called "mirtazapine" and i put on 2 stone in 3 months and this was due to the side effect of increased appetite ....
now on sertaline ive noticed im not as hungry as before but my anxiety is back a bit allthough this could also be due to reducing the mirtazapine quite quickly
in my opinion SSNRI,s such as effexar are ok if sleep is a issue or your not eating enough ... but as for being better than sertaline thats a tough one
lets not forget each anti-deprresent is different and one may work for one person and not another ,,so in theory discussing the pro,s and cons of anti-depressents is pretty much useless
just see how you go with the effexar .... if you notice and sudden weight gain or other bad side effects then see your gp
the one thing i have noticed with sertaline compared to the SSNRI is more interest in things .. i found ssnri,s like mirtazapine too sedating .....
i hope this helps gill and best wishes
