Elderly mother's fall

Posted , 3 users are following.

My 87 year old mother has fallen, broken her wrist, broken bones in her foot and torn a ligament. She is due to start physio etc but is convinced she will never walk again. She has other circulation problems in her legs where she has lost feeling in her feet, but I think it is the 'bad' leg that has the current problems. Her injuries are on the left side, she is right handed, but has broken that wrist in the past so it is probably not that strong. Any advice?

Your mum will need all the mental and emotional support you can give her. Get the rest of your family involved in supporting her rehabilitation. She is probably really frightened by what has happened. Also, worried that she won't be able to get back on her feet. As the other post said, get her back on her feet. Once she starts to see improvements her confidence will grow.

My GP told me that his elderly mother had a colles fracture and she had made a full recovery.  I had my doubts in the early stages but reassure your mother that it will get better with time.  Knowing that she has broken bones before she will know how long it takes and this must be scary for her.  Its an emotional roller coaster and she will need strong family support to regain her confidence.   I agree with the replies below - encourage her to get back on her feet.  What were simple but impossible tasks slowly become more achievable.  Good luck
