Elevated Alpha-Fetoprotein

My lab tests revealed elevated AFP and I'm wondering what this means. I recently had elevated liver enzymes but now they are back to normal. The hepatologist is a bit stumped but I'm scheduled for an MRI on Feb. 6 to check for any masses.

I think an extremely high level of AFP in the blood greater than 500ng /ml could be a sign of liver tumors or its use to screen or diagnose non-cancerous disorders of the liver, such as cirrhosis. but, talk with your DR 1st

Mine is only 10ng and the upper limit is 8.3ng. I recently had liver damage from a medication, so it could just be a sign of the liver repairing itself. I hope that's what it is.

Yes yours is small i would not worry too much. but, do keep a check on it. Why is the hepatologist stumped when they are so small. I was always told if they are small let them along unless they are causing you problems or growing.

So the AFP number is directly related to how large the tumor is?

Well you said they are back to normal so you shouldn't worry. You are in better position than most people I wouldn't worry . You are fine it's good you are keeping a check on them

Enzymes are back to normal but AFP is elevated and that's why my doctor ordered an MRI to check for tumors.

I apologize I confused your elevated AFP numbers with checking for tumors but still AFP is still low numbers so that's good news in it self.
