Elevated ALT and GGT, Low Sodium: Worried about Diagnosis

Hi All,

I am just wondering if anyone has any advice or insight into what might be going on,

Im a 26 year old woman, I previously used to drink quite a lot for about 4-5 years but I now drink very infrequently (4-5 times a month) and it is normally within the UK drinking guidlines (I have 1/2 a pint or 1 glass of wine)

Although I do feel very tired out sometimes I have felt ok in myself although I do get the odd ache every now again on my right side. My appitite is fine. I am overweight for my age and build but I am trying to loose the weight at the moment.

I should also mention as I will explain later in this post but I have also noticed (this isnt new but has been going on for about a year but has got worse lately) that I very often get cramps in my calf just from walking (not very far either) and my ankes very often swell up after walking or being on my feet for a while.

I went for a very routine blood test and it came back that my ALT levels were elevated although the doctor never said how much by. She advised me to wait a few weeks and have a repeat blood test, I went back and had the repeat blood test a good month later and she said that my GGT has gone up from 140 odd (I cant remember the exact figure) to 240 (again it was around the 240 mark but cant remember the exact figure) and my sodium levels was low, she didnt say what my ALT or AST levels were.

She has booked me in for a ultrasound of my liver, another blood test basically testing every bit of my kidneys and liver under the sun and also I need to do a urine test.

As I have been quite worried about this I have been looking online and found that low sodium can cause the fluid retention hence the swollen ankles and an inbalance of electrolytes can cause the calf cramps but I doubt this could be connected to the elevated liver enzymes. I was looking up what my elevated enymes could mean and Fatty Liver Disease keeps on coming up. Does this sound like a poss diagnosis? Has anyone had similar symptoms to mine? Obviously I know I prob wont know till I have the scan and I see the doctor again but any insight, help or advice would be really appreciated.

Many Thanks

    Hi Suzyq,

Thanks for the reply, The repeat blood test that I'm going to have when I go for my scan is quite though and will test me for hepititis etc, is that what it may sound like?
