Embarking on the journey of resolving my issues and requesting advice

Hello gentlemen. I am 50 ys old and I have been struggling over the last few years with BPH and it's come to the breaking point. That is to say I went to the ER two nights ago and had a catheter put in. Fun stuff. I'll be making an appointment with a urologist right away of course and I just wanted to reach out to you guys who have been through this. I've gone through the forum and you all seem to have plenty of information but since I'm new to this I don't know what you are referring to. So, if I may, I'd like to ask your advice on what questions I should be asking my urologist at this point so I make sure I make the right decisions for myself. From what I've gathered from this forum I understand that knowing the size of the prostate is important and the condition of the bladder. But you guys mention things like PVR and other medical terms. Could you give me a short list of things to ask? I feel this would help me cut through a lot of research. Much appreciated. Glad to be here and I'm sure I will learn a lot from this forum as I go, and perhaps share my own information for those whom it may help.

PVR = post void retention= How pee is left in bladder after going pee

    Just some thoughts:

When the uro does the digital rectal exam (DRE) and says your prostate 40 grams don't believe him. Get it measured via ultra sound, CT scan etc.

If your uro is a one trick pony, find another. The only procedure first uro did was TURP. Had it not been for this forum I would have had it done.

I opted for cialis/finasteride and I'm doing fine.

Don't be afraid the question what uro is telling you. They're in the business to make money plain and simple.

I'm sure others will chime in and I'll think of other things.

Good luck, DON"T MAKE A HASTY DECISION

Thanks Uncle. I was prescribed finasteride by my GP after I told him what had happened. He had me on Flomax which helped a little but obviously wasn't enough. I read about side effects like breast lumps etc. Did you suffer much of that? I figure any of this treatment will affect sexual performance so I'm quite prepared for that. As long as I can pee.

I've had no obvious side effects from finasteride. Been on it for 5 years. I stopped taking Flowmax and now take daily Cialis.

      Hey Rich

Each medication that doctor give men for BPH will effect each man different. Some men can take Flomax and does very little to them. When I was on it. ( Only for 2 weeks and said no way ) It gave me retro ejaculation and took away my orgasm. 2 weeks later I have my Urolift. That was almost 8 years ago.

A lot of men they fine that the Cialis does well for them in the urine department and it give them that little extra boost.

Be safe and never give up

    Hey there Richard

So sorry that you are have a problem. What Uncle is telling you is true. Stay away from a Turp and any procedure for now. You may not need a procedure. Medication may help. It may not even be your prostate. You need top have test on everything in the groin area.

Yes you need a CT Scan to see what is the size of your prostate. You said you went to the ER and had a catheter put in. Did they leave it in. You may have a median lobe and it is blocking the bladder neck.

If you don't like the first doctor get a second opinion. Never rush into the first thing you are told. Good luck....Ken

PS...We are here for you asked questions.

Hi Ken. They left it in but I got an appt. for a uro tomorrow so hopefully it can come out. Got the note on the CT scan. Thanks for the info. Yes, I plan to do what I can to get informed. No hasty decisions when it comes to this stuff.

That is good do not rush into anything. Find out why this is happening. Have them teach you how to do CIC. This way you would not have to go the the ER.

Do not let the doctor talk you into anything. You have to think about everything not just being able to pee.

      God Bless....Ken
