embarrassing problem

My sister has bouts of diarrhoea especially after greasy food She cannot eat anything with gravy or a cream sauce, but as long as she avoided these she coped Ok .Recently however over the last 18 months, she has had recurrent bouts of upper abdominal pain ,usually coming on during the night. It is a constant pain whch sometime moves round to her back .It's not as acute as the pain of gallstones,we know this because our younger sister had to have her gall bladder removed a few years ago.She has also started getting symptoms of flatulence and bloating, and more embarrassingly for her, when she goes to the toilet, although her motions are a normal colour, when she wipes it's yellow,as if she has drunk orange juice. Can ayone help or throw any light on what this could be? She has an appointment next week with her GP She was prescribed Omeprazole earlier this year as she was taking aspirin for HBP, and the GP thought that was causing the pain, but she still had a bout of this colicky pain and stopped taking them. Its the yellow stuff after a bowel movement that she is really worried about now ,and I hope someone can throw some light as to what it could be

    Hi

I know it is very worrying to have something different happening to your body, but to be quite honest until she sees a Dr and explains what is happening theres not a lot she can do. Sometimes a simple thing that you are eating can have a dire effect on you. It could be a food, a sweet or even tablets that you are taking. Perhaps if she was to list what she ate in a day for a month, she might be able to pinpoint something. I know it sound a bore, but look at it from the point of view if it going to stop or ease any pain or discomfort then it is a small price to pay.

Maybe when she has seen a Dr and got some info from them as to any test or tabs he prescribes, if you post back it might be easier to help. Please do take care and tell your sister to try and not to worry or stress too much, that alone can affect the body more than people realise.

Thanks for replying coughdrop. It will be interesting to see what the GP has to say. It is obviosly bile coming down but where from and whether its normal in everyone,or she has a problem we will hopefully find out. It's not something you go about asking people ,it took her long enough to mention it to me.I will post back and let you know what the doc says

well, she was at the GP yesterday and got a blood test to check for H pylori. He has also arranged for her to have a scan for gallstones ,and has prescribed Lansaprazole 30mg.She did mention the stools thing but he didnt seem concerned .Just said we will wait on the results of these. She is not convinced the Lansaprazole will be any different to the Omeprazole, but has started taking them this morning.I hope it is just IBS,but he said with the family connection of gallstones,it is quite likely to be that. Also, another sister has Gerd and has been on medication for the last 5 years,so obviously we all have some sort of digestive problems,as I get flare ups of IBS from time to time as well.

Will let you know how she gets on with the results, and thanks for replying.

Sister was told to see the GP re her blood test result, and got an appt for today. She was told it had tested positive for H pylori, and has been given a prescription for 2 types of antibiotic and Omeprazole. She has to take these for a week. In the meantime .she has to go for an ultrasound scan next Wed to check for gallstones. The GP says that maybe getting rid of the H pylori will cure her symptoms, but she could have gallstones as well.It will be another week or so after the ultrasound before she will know. She has had a couple of \"bilious\" attacks in the last couple of weeks, even though she felt the Lansoprazole were helping.I personally think she has gallstones, same as our younger sister, but all we can do is wait and see.

An update on my sister. On Saturday morning she woke with a niggling pain in her stomach, but decided to start the course of triple therapy for the H pylori Unfortunately, the niggly pain got worse and she was nauseous and retching and had to go to bed The pain lasted till 2pm and cocodamol didnt even touch it. Her stomach has been upset since and she hasnt taken any more of the antibiotics,as she felt too ill,and her stomach was empty. She ate a slice of dry toast on sat and not much more on Sunday and has had diarrhoea yesterday and today. She really is feeling rough, and thinks it's the gallstones to blame.although she hasnt been diagnosed yet. She goes on Wed for the ultrasound.Would H Pylori be responsible for all that pain, right side of upper abdomen and travelling up to her shoulder,as I cam't seem to find the symptoms caused by this.Does anyone know what symptoms this bacteria causes?

thank for replying DR Spock. I had a look at the leaflets and the gallbladder one seems to be what she is suffering from. She has had another bad bout of nightime pain on Tuesday night She was so ill yesterday Vomiting constantly, couldnt even keep water down . She managed to struggle to the hospital for her ultrasound, but has to wait for the result to be sent to her GP . Last night her husband was on the point of phoning the NHS 24 as she was vomiting up all the time and even a sip of water came back up.However, she got a better sleep and has had a cup of tea and toast and so far has kept it down .I hope she gets some help soon as these attacks are coming every few days now.

An update on my sister. She has now been diagnosed with gallstones. In fact the GP said the consultant couldnt check properly as the gall bladder had multiple stones,so she is waiting to see a consultant. She told the Gp about not being able to start the triple therapy because of the pain and sickness she was suffering, but he said to start it as soon as her stomach settled down. She has been fine all last week as she has totally changed her diet No fat at all,but this morning she resumed the triple therapy and a few hours later she started having pains in her upper back just above the right side of the rib cage. She knows now that is where the gallbladder is situated,so once more she has stopped the therapy. I think it is the Clarithromycin that may be causing it,as one of the side effects are liver and gallbladder problems. She is on Amoxycillin,Omeprazole and clarithromycin. Is there another drug she could take instead of the Clarithromycin?.

Has anyone else had any side effects from this drug?

Yes Ive felt Clarithromycin cramps, they made me want to go to hospital they were sooo bad sad An alternative is Metronidazole but even that can cause a (mild in comparison) upset tummy :?

Amoxycillin did for me when I had a chest infection last year. I was sick as a dog until I stopped taking it. People I have spoken to said it often has that effect on them too.
