Encouragement for anyone having Open Myomectomy Surgery

It is 10 days now since I had Open Myomectomy surgery. 32 Fibroids were removed, which surprised me, and I was in hospital for 5 nights. I am now home and getting stronger each day. The days before the surgery were anxious days but at the same time I was looking forward to the sugery and being free from the many symptons that fibroids cause. I had a great surgeon and anathestist and went fully prepared mentally, physically and spiritually for the surgery.

Surgery took 2 hours and remember being brought back to my hospital bed hooked up to IV fluids, catheter, oxygen and equipment on my legs to stop blood clots. Pain was minimal, similar to mild period pain and I was encouraged to use the Morphine pump to manage the pain for 2 days. Morphine did make me feel nauseated which is common.  Once I was free from catheter and IVs on day 3 I was encouraged to do my Pelvic exercises and to walk around the hospital corridor. I was given paracetamol and ibuprophen at regular intervals and BP, tempearture and Pulse was moniored on a regular basis, which were all fine. I was encouraged to drink more fluids and had no issues with empyting my bladder or bowels so knew everything was working OK. Getting in and out of bed and sitting up was difficult during the first 5 days but  became easier each day. Its amazing how much we rely on our stomach muscles for so many things. Once I was home on Day 6 I started doing very light duties around the house and a 10 minute walk outside plus regular naps whenever I felt fatigue. I can now do 15 minute walks and looking forward to getting stronger each day. I have some swelling around the incision but that is normal at this stage.  Will see the surgeon 20 days after my surgery for post-op checks.

Overall my surgery went very well and I am very pleased with the progress I am making. Although Open Myomectomy is major surgery, becasue of the advance in technology, the skills of the surgeon and the excellent pain management and hospital care  it is  a much easier experience than I thouht it would be.

If you have been told by your consultant that you need Open Myomectomy surgery do not be afraid, focus on the positive aspects of being free of fibroids symptons, read up on the procedure, watch videos of the procedure if your that way inclined, understand the risks, prepare yourself physically and mentally and follow the advice given by your consultant on the aftercare.

I am grateful to God that my surgery went well and I am looking forward to getting back to the gym in dure course and having a better quality of life without fibroids.

Be encouraged, don't be fearful smile

I am worried about having mine. I haven't had kids yet and many surgeons refused to operate bcoz of the risk of adhesions which can affect pregnancy. Was anyone else worried about this?

All the best with your reovery, dont forget to follow the pain killer instructons given to minimise pain and swelling, the pelvic exercises and no heavy lifting. I am now Day 13 since surgery and feeling much stronger and have no pain, but still taking pain killers to reduce  swelling. I can now walk 30 min and can do shopping as long as its very light items. I knew I had multiple fibroids but was surprised I had 32 fibroids, the surgeon photographed and showed me on Day 2, they were arranged according to size and looked like a piece of art. I didnt ask for a copy of the photo as I am not that way inclined. I am looking forward to a better quality of life.

I was worried about adhesions too, but spoke to the surgeon and looked online about this prior to surgery. Technology and medical advancement has moved on, surgeons use a protective barrier to prevent adhesions once the  fibroids are removed. Some surgeons also use a balloon inside the cavity of the uterus to prevent adhesions if necessary, plus a skilled surgeon will use various techniques to minimise  adhesions. Best thing to do is to research online and then also ask your surgeon about it. All surgery carries some risk and doing nothing about fibroids also carries some risk. Today is Day 13 since my surgery and I am doing very well. I will have a pelvic examination in due course to check everything, I am hopeful everything will be fine.

Best to ask your doctor for a full pelvic examination (MRI scan) at least 3 months after your fibroid surgery to check that everything is OK. Try not to worry, a lot of people go on to have successful pregnancies after fibroids have been removed. All the best.

    Hey,

So reassuring to read your post as I'm having myomectomy surgery in October. I've been suffering with fibroids over two years, pain and discomfort, heavy periods. It's been a nightmare and I want my life back!!! I'm 28 with no children, I have 7 fibroids, the biggest being 12 cm which clearly protrudes out my belly. My doctor said he's going to have to cut behind the lining of my womb because there's a few behind there also. I've never been put to sleep or ever had an operation and I am petrified. Even more so as they are cutting from my belly button down and there's a chance I'll be left with a keloid scar sad

Don't be afraid focus on a positive outcome. Surgery has moved on and you will find its not as bad as you think its going to be. Make sure you are in good physical shape and have a good diet before the surgery as that helps with recovery.  A 12cm fibroid will continue to grow and cause more problems so its best to deal with it. I am now 5 months after surgery and in great shape, will have another checkup of my uterus at 6 months. To be honest I wish I had done the surgery earlier as I suffered with fibroid pain and heavy bleeding for 10 years. All the best.
