Endometriosis and Hysterectomy

Posted , 4 users are following.

I've had endo for 24 years, diagonsed through a lapaoscopy 21 years ago. Since stopping hormonal contraceptives 2 years ago because of a breast cyst my endo is back with a vengeance, absolute horrendous pain with tissue in my periods and unbelievable backache. Booked to see the gynae consultant next week and was hoping to have a hysterectomy (if allowed) is this the answer?

    Hi Wendy

I had a hysterectomy at 42 following diagnosis of endometriosis and have never looked back.  It was such a relief to be rid of the pain and heavy periods.

I had never wanted children and had been sterilised a few years before, so it was a no-brained for me.

      Hi Patsyrose,

I was worried I'd be refused because of my age. I've had my children and hormonal contraception is a no no for me so its seems a no-brainer for me too. Was just worried about the horror stories about severe menopause symptoms and complications with bowel and bladder and does it actually cure endometriosis at the end of the day?

Hi. I had total hysterectomy last week for endometriosis. I have also had laparoscopy to properly diagnose and unfuse my organs that were glued together with endo and that worked for a while too. You have more chance of success if ovaries removed which I have gone for but it is a big decision depending on how close to menopause you are. I'm 40 so will eventually go onto hrt once I have had 6 months to make sure endo gone. Good luck with consultant. Maybe ask if hospital has an endo specialist you can be referred to?

Hi, froggy I'm 49 in July and menopuse not in sight yet and periods worse than ever. I just hope that is is endo and not something more sinister. I have always put any pelvic and back pain down to endo but your minds starts going mad. The pain is so bad, I think the only option is a hysterectomy, did you have any other problems after your op?

I'm still sore but hot flushes etc aren't as bad as I'd built up in my head. I had hormone levels checked so know i was fully loaded with them so was expecting to been thrown in at deep end. I'm not sure how long it takes for hormones to leave your system so I may well be eating my words. I've been put on livial as can't take hrt yet which I wasn't sure about but that could have helped too. Life without pain has to be worth it in my case and periods every 20 days is now a thing of the past! I was surprised when I was advised to lose the lot at my age. I didn't have to ask. Its worth having laparoscopy to check what's happening as scans Dont show everything!

How long did you have to wait for your hysterectomy froggy?

I waited 3 months for laparoscopy for diagnosis check up. Had that December. I actually had date for hysterectomy through for Feb but because I chose to delay it, I didn't actually have it til last week. So really just a few months

    Hi Wendy

I was put on HRT (Premarin) in the hospital, but decided that I didn't need it after 2-3 years and have no real menopausal symptoms apart from occasional heat.  My endo surrounded one ovary and then was attached to the bowel and bladder, with the added problem of a fibroid wrapped around it...which was why I had so much pain every month.  Apart from the occasional soreness in that area if I'd been on my feet for a while, I've had no other problems since the operation back in 2002.

Hi I had severe endometriosis for 12 years

    And I suffered everyday.

I had to have it removed on a yearly basis

    To the back end.

I had my hysterectomy in 2012 aged 37

I have not looked back I wish I could

    Of had it sooner.

I have had to surgery afterwards to

Unstick my bowel and remove my appendix

    Due to the endometriosis.

I did have to rest and take it easy

    For 6 weeks.

Good luck hope all goes well
