Posted , 7 users are following.

I have been suffering from chronic gerd and oesophagitis for ages now. Badly affecting my eating and sleeping habits as well as social life and weight. Have been on omeprazole, nizac and slippery elm and still getting symptoms. Blood tests returned as normal. I have an endoscapy booked in for Monday but am anxious if nothing shows up on that, where do I go from there????

You don't actually say what symptoms of GERD you are experiencing. If it is burning pain sensation, PPIs (like omperazole) and to a lesser extent H2 blockers (like Nizac) shuld reduce that if taken correctly for a few wekks. It may be you need a higher dose. Discuss this with your doctor.

If you symptoms are mainly from reflux - throat clearing, cough, hoarseness etc, lifestyle changes should manage it: reducing weight (if necessary), aviding overfilling your stomach by eating little and often etc.

The endoscopy will see if you have any permanent damage (eg Barrett's Oesophagus which has the abilit to mutate to cancer. )

If nothing sinister is found, the doctors will help you adjust nedication and lifestyle to manage your condition.

      Hey Barretts,

I was taking omeprazole for a few weeks (around 10 in total) but other than burping, felt basically better and weaned myself off. I've now not taken it for 19 days. Yesterday, after a weekend of eating some spicy food and veg (I know that's bad) I feel really hollow and gassy inside. It's really scared me and kept me awake last night since my symptoms have been easier to manage recently. I feel like noxious gas is coming up my throat. It's also making me feel a bit sick when I eat. Have I given myself gastritis? Should I get back on omeprazole? It became a lot easier to eat but this gassy feeling makes me not want to eatsad

Was your omeprazole prescribed or did you just get it over-the-counter?

If the former, why was it prescribed and did you discuss stopping it with your doctor? If the latter, 10 weeks is too long for self-medication without seeing a doctor.

Unless you have determined it to be a particular trigger for you, Spicy food shouldn't cause a problem for either acid hyper-secretion nor reflux. (If it were, the Indian sub-continent would have the highest rates of oesophageal disorders instead of being amongst the lowest. )

The patient support charity I co-founded and chair, Barrett's Wessex, has an annual curry evening initiated by our senior consultant gastroenterologist.

I think you need to discuss this with your doctor who may wish to investigate with a gastroscopy to find out what's happening.

Did you get the endoscopy? For now you have 3 options, so stop eating foods that are hurting you, to take the medications or your best option to believe in God and receive what was given to you and all of us 2017 years ago.  ;-)

      Jose

      God Bless!

      Hey Barretts,

I did have an endoscopy scheduled but was too scared to go. I have really bad health anxiety and these digestive issues are so invasive to wellbeing, I've been in a mess.

Omeprazole was prescribed. MY GP said I have hyperacidity. I was feeling well again so weaned myself off taking them. I only started getting severe symptoms again yesterday but the gas build up and pressure in my throat feels burny. I seem to be reacting badly to onions. I am able to eat spicy food a few times a week and not have any symptoms.

My GP said because I am not symptomatic every day, because of my health anxiety and I put on weight again that he didn't think an endoscopy was necessary. He believes I have acid reflux and did discuss that I could stay on omeprazole long term. I think I should have listened to him because the past 2 days have been miserable and (other than a bit of burping and bloating after certain foods) I was feeling a lot better this month.

      HEy Papote,

Thank you for your kind words. I believe I will get to the root of my problem since I don't want to suffer and accept my symptoms. I am a spiritual person but have felt really diminished by going through this as a lot of people on the forum have, and although I try to relax and be more spiritual or philosophical about it, I need to find a root before I can continue my life. I'm going to go back on medication because it at least controls it and it becomes more predictable. I have health anxiety OCD so having an unpredictable condition spring up overnight has really affected my mental health and I need to get more control over my body again. Hope you're feeling ok x

You need to get that endoscopy done brother.  Barrets can give you his opinion and so can we but if you want real answers you need to get that endoscopy done or trust the Lord for the answers.

I suffered for many years and in my case it was not the food and instead it was 100% stress and people and doctors telling me you have this illness, you have that illness.  Now, after 5 endoscopes (which by the way there is nothing to fear) I have decided I can't trust the Lord part-time and decided to trust him 150%. Guess what?  In just 4 days my body is turning around which never did in almost 4 years.  You need to trust the Lord 150%, believe in him and believe you were healed 2017 years ago.  You need to speak the word out loud and claim your healing.  This is no joke, your mind controls your body and if we were healed 2017 years ago what ever we think we have now is not real and we need to claim our healing in loud voice. Not just say I believe in God but I need to find out what is wrong with me, because that is exactly what is wrong with us that we allowed this unreal illness to be part of us when in reality is not real because we were all healed.  You can do a search in the scientific word or read the word in the bibble, is all there and applies to all of us as long as we believe and we trust God.  Now, we both now this is just physical healing, salvation is another story and we all know we need to repent.

Read my comments above, guess why you have no real condition but feel the pain?  Sure, this doesn't mean you can go out and eat like crazy. ;-)
