Endoscopy

Posted , 3 users are following.

After my endoscopy i was told that my Barretts length is 12cm.

I am not sure if this is average or not!!!

5 biopsies were taken so will wait and see what the results are.

12 cm is actually quite a long segment.

The size is usually recorded according to the Prague classification cxmy where x and y are measurements in cms of the circumferential ring of the massof it and the maximum length of any tongues.

Most Barrett's segments are around the 3 cm mark though one patient I met has/had 20cm.

According to the Seattle protocol, 4 biospies should be taken quadrantically every centimetre so you should have had more han 5 over such a length.

      Thank you for the information.

I have never been told about the Prague Classsification and am wondering if my Hospital is familiar with it.

As for the biospies I hope that they were following a recognised proceedure and will have to wait for the results.

Just got a letter back from my consultant. The Biopsies comfirm the diagnosis of Barrett's but there are no worrying changes.

So it's a daily dose of 40 mg omeprazole and a sensible diet untill the next time.

    That's good news, then.

In time you may be able to reduce the omeprazole to 20mg but staying on them will probably reduce any risks of progression and regular surveillance every few years would show any progression, if it were to happen, early enough to be treated.
