Endoscopy

Hi. I've been on lansoprazole 30mg for 6 years and at bad times 60mg. Anyhow I'm being sent for an endoscopy and I've been told I can't take my meds for about 10 days before. How can I do this, I'll feel really ill. I'm assuming loads of you have had the procedure. How do you go so long without meds?

    Hi Gary,

All I can say is stock up on gaviscom advance. Does the job when I didn't have PPIs. I have recently had the operation for reflux and a hiatus hernia. I've never felt better. By the way with the endoscopy I would ask for a sedative as without it can be quite unpleasant I've heard.

Hope all goes well. Good luck.

    Hi Gary

I had been on ppi's for 2 years before I had Endoscopy and I have to admit that stopping taking them for a week before did no harm. I have tried for longer periods of time without but did notice the difference, As for the Endoscopy I have had 2 and neither time did I have the sedative and it is not as bad as you would be led to believe.

You have to wean yourself off gradually , don’t stop cold turkey . If you take more than one pill a day , replace one with Zantac or Pepcid . Keep reducing the dosage until you are off , than start replacing the Zantac with an acid neutralizer like Gaviscon . take a good probiotic every day , I started taking apple cider vinegar before every meal to get the gastric juices flowing . Getting off those terrible pills is a good thing , they are so hard on your liver and kidneys .

    Gary,

Can you tell me what the Endoscopy is?

What is the purpose of the Endoscopy?

I think they just want to see if I have a hiatal hernia or something else. I'm worried that if they find nothing then lansoprazole will be taken off me and I'll feel I'll again

I was taken off the ppi after 3 months on it as the follow up endoscopy showed my Barretts esophagus was minimal; It was manageable for 3 yrs (but now all the symptoms are back of  reflux...so going to visit gastroenterologist again and probably do another endoscopy).

You will be fine without them. It's just 10 days, don't worry too much

    Hi Gary.

I was prescribed Omeprazole and took it for months when I was diagnosed with GERD. It had horrible side effects like extreme fatigue & dizziness. Omeprazole helped with the extreme chest pain and tightness caused by GERD but that's about it for me. You can do other things to control your acid because eventually you'll have to stop taking the medications.

Try eating smaller meals and more frequently. I also controlled my diet, ate the most basic and bland food ever. For at least 3-4 weeks, I didn't take onions and garlic. Then I started adding them back into my diet but it was a slow progress. I started taking Fish Oil. Probiotic/enzyme pills didn't work on me. I drank ginger tea and ate manuka honey. Not sure which helped but eventually I got better.

    All the best Gary!
