Endoscopy Advice

Hi,
I have a fear of having the camera go down me again, i had one done back in aug 2010 and it was not nice i did get told i have a Hitias Hernia, which was sorted out October 2011. Since having the op i have had ongoing swallowing problems and saw the consultant in feb and Aug this year.
He said they need to check the wrap and will need another endoscopy, have had 2 dates for it and canceled it.
Been booked back in to see the consultant and i know he will have a go, is there any way if he still goes ahead with it that i can be put to sleep or really sedated.
Will post again friday.
Hope anyone can help

I read your post and understand your concern. I also have a fear of all medical procedures.
I had to have an endoscopy (Bronchoscopy) in late August. I was given a sedation which included amnesia before the procedure and it worked well for me. I don't remember anything of the procedure at all!
I had a previous sedation to have a pacemaker fitted late last year. I was conscious during the procedure but felt no pain. The sedation for the bronchoscopy was deeper, and I felt and remember nothing.
Go for it Mark, but do ask for that level of sedation

Thanks for reply, i saw the consultant and he said that he will re-arrange the endoscopy and he also asked if i wanted to be put to sleep to have it done. I off cause said yes and he hopes to do me as a day case within six weeks.
He also said about dilation using a balloon to widen so i can swallow better.
Will let you know when i have a date.

Even though I work in the Health Service I am a very bad patient! I have a bad phobia of needles so when I was told I had to have an endoscopy done I paniced to say the least. Then I heard I could opt for just throat spray. I had the procedure done on Fri (4th Jan 2013) I was admitted at 8am and was brought down for the procedure by 8.30am, I was back on the ward and getting dressed by 8.55am!
While having the scope done was far from fun I could imagine worse things! The spray didn't numb me enough to stop me speaking but it worked. I felt no pain but I did gag a lot with the movement of the pipe. Def fast for longer than the 8 hours advised to ensure less vomiting,I fasted for 12hrs not he recommended 8hrs. I feel this helped. I was allowed to walk home and left the hospital at 9.30am. As the spray wore off my throat got sore but only when I swallowed but it is now Sat night and it is still sore, prob bruised because of the gagging against the pipe. Paracetemol worked on that.
I can't praise the staff enough, they were wonderful and very patient with me. No rushing and very understaning of my phobia. After all done turns out I have a hernia and not the ulcers that were suspected.
I suppose with or without sedation is a very personal choice but if you prepare well and know what to expect it's half the battle.
I wish you all the best with your procedure and hope it goes well.
