Enlarged lymph node in groin

Hi,

I’m a 21 year old male and recently noticed a pea sized lump on the upper left thigh in my groin.  I only notice it when I press down, but it feels like a hard mass, and doesn’t really move much except with the skin itself.  I have also had some congestion and really sore throat this past week.

A doctor this morning examined it and explained I should just wait a few weeks and see if it goes away.  I am very concerned it may be lymphoma or cancer.  I hear that lymph nodes can enlarge when sick, but not sure if the groin lymph nodes can as well.  Maybe I just haven’t noticed it before.

Has anyone had this or know anything about it?  Thank you

If its a lymphoma that is not cancerous I have one of those on my upper left leg had it checked out no cancer it doesn't bother me no it hasn't got bigger been it's the same size it was when I had this checked in May 2018 my doctor order an ultra sound on that too check that I got another one too that came up I been tested for cancer threw my entire body none no where. I would just wait too see if your doctor sends you over too radiology and have it checked out that may not even be cancer ok.

Thanks yea, she doesn’t seemed too concerned yet, and neither do doctors in my family.  I’m worried because it’s about 1.5cm, round, hard, and painless.  Not sure if it moves either.

Could it be a sebaceous cyst or ingrown hair ?

Doctor said it’s an inguinal lymph node, but I’m worried since it’s round hard and painless

That I would watch that could be a possibility of having penile cancer or having an STD better get that checked just in case though tell your doctor you want a second opinion on that it is he planning on having you sent to specialist too have it checked?

I will ask.  But hopefully it’s just me having a cold right now.  Is there ever a possibility of swollen hard lymph nodes that aren’t painful in the groin during a cold?

I would get another opinion on that if I was you too make sure of what has caused that.

hey there, i hope you’ve been feeling better. i think you know the answer to your own question, and just might have some anxiety which is ok! lymph nodes do exist in the groin area and can become inflamed when your body is fighting a virus, which it sounds like it is. it might make you feel better to know i had a terrible sinus infection this spring and had a lymph node swell in the same spot, actually! it’s more common to have it swell in your throat or neck (near the place of infection) but it’s regular for any lymph node on your body to swell when you are sick. they are in all sorts of places.

if this is not the case, then it is much more common to experience swelling there due to other less concerning reasons than lymphoma, like a UTI, ingrown hair, or STI. it might be worth getting tested even if just for peace of mind or future reference if you are sexually active, STIs are not as scary as the media makes them sound as all of them are either curable or treatable. either way, much less troubling than lymphoma which i don’t think this is!

our body is also known for producing benign lumps and bumps for no reason. you aren’t having any other symptoms right now so there’s not much cause for concern regarding lymphoma. breathe easy, hope you feel better soon smile

thank you very much! im still pretty anxious about this and have been sweating a lot and feeling really tired, but thats likely due to my anxiety. i guess im nervous because everything i read says that a hard painless lump is likely to be cancer vs a soft movable and tender lump. did your node happen to be hard as well? i also dont know how long ive had it so that also scares me.

but i have had a lot of bloodwork and a ct done of my abdomen, chest, and pelvis three months ago for a separate concern. would they have likely caught a possible cancer or lymphoma back then in the blood work or scans?

      thank you

yes, those tests would have caught a malignant problem. actually, blood tests and CT scans are the standard testing protocol when it comes to examining a patient that a doctor suspects lymphoma with. so in a way, you have already been tested for lymphoma since you have had both and they were fine! I hope you are feeling better. perhaps your lump has even receded by now. if not, it's certainly benign if you have already had these other tests in such recent history.

during my sinus infection i remember my groin lymph node being pretty hard, less tender than i expected it to be but it was mostly painless, if that helps!

i appreciate your words! i actually ended up seeing a different doctor last week who didnt know if it was a lymph node or ingrown hair nodule thing because he didnt seem to think lymph nodes could be located in the upper left thigh, rather they are usually more in the pelvic region. i think he is wrong about that but he ordered blood tests for complete blood count, LDH, lymphocytes, etc. i will get those results tomorrow.

the lump is still there and i cant tell if its gotten bigger, but still feels to be around a big pea small marble size 1.5-1.75 cm and round and hard.

If the blood tests come back normal tomorrow, im not sure if i should be pushing for an ultrasound because i know blood tests cant diagnose lymphoma, but my node is still scaring me. but i am hopeful that the new blood tests would show something as well.

i appreciate all the comments. i do suffer from really bad health anxiety and some of my old symptoms like dizziness, headaches, and blurry vision have come back due to the anxiety. im hoping everything will be resolved shortly

I got my blood tests back today. Normal blood count, Norma lymphocyte count, but slightly elevated LDH and Calcium levels. Doc doesn’t know why. Would lymphocyte be abnormal if I had lymphoma? Thanks.

Is it your choloestrol levels better watch that watch what you eat and eat healthy foods if that is what it is or it could be a possibility it could be Leukemia I would get a second opinion though on that it just maybe your cholesterol and your calcium levels watch that also.

thanks. yea as a 21 year old, im overwieght and my glucose levels were high as well. im hoping that maybe the ldh levels are up because im overweight. would there usually be any other indicators for lukeimia or cancer? thanks

Being overweight is not good on your heart and it can cause alot of problems like diabetes ldh i can bet that is your cholesterol I.know about that and blood pressure problems and also prediabetic also I have all 3 and take meds everyday for those I googled that up online ldh and leukemia was on there but too.me.I.would get another opinion on that.

thank you. i am actually on a diet and am trying to get back into exercising because i need to lose weight.

my CBc, white and red counts all came back normal and lymphocytes and all that jazz were in normal range as well. calcium was just slightly higher than the reference range and LDH was 254 which seems to be normal for some older people or younger people, but slightly higher than the ref range for my age of 130-235. in my ct scan a few months ago, a different doctor noticed that i had a fatty liver which might also contribute to LdH?

im still pretty nervous but feel relaxed

Wow that is high mine was near 300 at the end of November of last year I was sick fatty liver disease I have that exercising and watching what you eat helps that I had a 5 cm poylp the only option for me was too have half of my colon removed they checked my lymph nodes all came back no cancer no where but they did tell me I had an abnormal liver which I told them what it was you can even look online and read on what to.do.for fatty liver and your blood pressure and cholesterol and high blood sugar levels. I have went threw 4 procedures this year alone not scared of no surgeries either. Just remain calm sounds like you may have some aniexty which is normal in this case just get all the testing done the more you get your answers the better you will feel.

thanks so my LdH could be elevated just because of fatty liver? thats reassuring given that better diet and exercise can help reduce that.
