My Urologist has suggested treatment for my enlarged prostate using KTP laser(PVP). Would appreciate comments regarding this procedure vs. HoLEP or  TURP

Hey Pete  Sorry your having a problem.  Have you look it up on the internet.  I did not like what I read and the side effects.  Did your doctor offer you any other procedure to think about.  Before you do anything please read up on it.   Once its done there is no going back  Ken

Have you looked into PAE or Urollift?  PAE has no sexual side effects.

Urolift has no side effects either.  I have had both the PAE and the UROLIFT.

Hi, i have just had a TURP the standard procedeure, it all went very well and 15 weeks later am back to normal. I am 67 and  cycle competeively still, so all is well, however i am not sure  i would recommend the procedeure to anyone else. WHY... well the downside is, retro ejaculation, the sex is ok, but????? the  recovery period was sketchey with info, it was try and see...and several times i  was wrong !! i would suggest research into urolift, noit sure what pae IS?? i think laser  turp and standard turp amount to the same thing after discussions with users of both operations!!!!! anyway lots of research is the no1 action, all the best..Syd

A big difference in recovery time with laser versions. On day two after my PVP I travelled home by train. On Day three I went to the races and on day five I walked about three miles to a dermatology appointment as there was a bus strke. No blood after day three apart from a little spurt at the start of urination.

The day after my Holmium laser version I came home rom the hospital by bus with a catheter in and then back later in the day as a clot had blocked it. All totally pain free after surgery and on day two after PVP woke up with an erection.

Hey there.  Before you had the turp did your doctor tell you the side effect or did he just say everything will be the same  Information is the key...Ken

He did not tell me anything about the TURP.! I did the research myself but didn't find out enough as it turns out. I was extremely lucky not to have gotten any bad issues. I prayed a lot that I would not end up with dripping and reverse ejaculation etc.

In the big hospitals the surgery and procedure are rooms are much like a meat factory. And guess who the cows are!

HI, yes the consultant was fairly thorough with the pre-amble...retro ejaculation etc etc, but after the op ,not much real helpful advice!!, in fact my retro ejaculation is not so severe now, something does come out, not a lot , but its a start! And i have just had my follow up appointment for August!! 5 months later !! hmnn, however on the positive side i am feeling much more  relaxed and happier!

    Strongly suggest the PAE.

    Worked for me.

TURP did not work and was a terrible experience.

      Hi Pete,

June 2nd this year. Unbelievable improvement.

Dr Bagla, Inova Hospital, Alexandria Virginia.

Flew down from Maine the day before and did some sight seeing, had the procedure the next day stayed in a motel nearby, took taxi's, and the metro all over the place the next day to sight see some more and then flew home on the third day.

Only on the night of the procedure was there any discomfort and it was very minor. Take it very easy for 2 weeks afterwards. Have it done, life is so much better now, trust me on that.

      Good luck to you

HoLEP would be as invasive and effective as TURP. However, the holmium techniques somewhat reduce the amount of time people need to stay in hospital and have a catheter. And there is no risk of developing TUR syndrome.

As far as PVP is considered, it instantly removes excess prostate tissue. As a result, symptom relief is immediate or occurs in the next several days just as it does after TURP. Also, laser energy immediately seals blood vessels, making it a virtually bloodless procedure -- unlike TURP, resulting in lesser hospital stays.
