Enlarged spleen and sports!! Help

Posted , 2 users are following.

my 13 year old daughter recently had a well visit where she complained of frequent urination.

she had a sonogram done.. it showed a spleen measuring 13.7cm.

follow up sonogram 5 days later showed the spleen at 13.5 cm.

all bloodwork came back normal including mono. chest xray was clear.

she is a softball catcher. doctor told her she cant play.

i have a 2 part question.

#1 is the doctor being overly cautious and can she play with a rib guard?

#2 how long typically will it take for the spleen to be 12cm so she can play?

No the doctor is not being overly cautious, and please take the advice seriously. An enlarged spleen is at risk of rupturing and that is a medical emergency. Its just not worth the risk of letting her play sports.

Most enlarged spleens, with proper care and treatment have recovered after 6 weeks but please consult your doctor as to when he/she thinks its OK to play sports again. It depends on the reason for the enlargement.
