ENSURE DRINK

Hello.

My name in Joanna and I have joined the group in the hopes of helping my Mother, who is a celiac sufferer since years.

She has always gotten by but things of late are not good. Constant vomit and diarreah. She's been living on ENSURE nutritional drink for some time however I am now begining to think that it may be that which is causing her to have thse flare-ups.

Does anyone have any experience with this ?

These are the ingredients:

Water, Corn Maltodextrin, Sugar, Milk Protein Concentrate, Canola Oil, Corn Oil, Soy Protein Isolate. Less than 0.5% of the Following: Whey Protein Concentrate, Natural & Artificial Flavor, Magnesium Phosphate, Potassium Citrate, Sodium Citrate, Soy Lecithin, Calcium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Ascorbic Acid, Salt, Carrageenan, Potassium Hydroxide, Ferrous Sulfate, dl-Alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate, Zinc Sulfate, Niacinamide, Manganese Sulfate, Calcium Pantothenate, Cupric Sulfate, Thiamine Chloride Hydrochloride, Vitamin A Palmitate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Chromium Chloride, Folic Acid, Sodium Molybdate, Biotin, Sodium Selenate, Potassium Iodide, Phylloquinone, Vitamin D3, and Cyanocobalamin.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Thank you

Joanna.

Is she eating a balanced diet too? Doesn't look like there's any gluten in the ingredients

I worry about the sodium content in it. No, she consumes only ENSURE, nothing else.

I'm no expert but lack of fibre and other essentials is more likely causing the problems - I'm sure those protein shakes are only supposed to be taken short term and alongside other food?? I'd ask gp

Wow, Joanna - you're right to be worried...not for gluten reasons, though.

Abbott, the maker of Ensure, says it's gluten and lactose free, so you can rule that out as the cause of her current troubles. But, how can a liquid diet produce solid stool?

Many Celiacs continue to suffer because they have difficulty digesting gums such as the Carrageenan in the ingredients you listed. Has your mother been tested for food allergies? She could be allergic to something in the drink (soy?) or have difficulty tolerating one or more ingredients.  I looked online at Boost ingredients, but same possible culprits there.

Why is she on a liquid diet? Is it self-imposed? She should see her doctor again and make an appointment for nutritional counseling with a celiac-specializing nutritionist.

    Hugs to you both!!
