Just had another ent appointment . Still have etd . Though I am managing to pop my ears more than last year ( fingers crossed it may continue ) I have also been diagnosed with exzema in ear canal . He thinks this may be the cause of my constant ear infections and not the etd as I thought . i find it strange that this eczema has come about after I got etd though I don't know what the link would be . My hearing is within normal range though I don't know how as I have a constant vibration sound in my ear and ringing in my other .

Hello, I'm afraid it certainly does sound as though you do in fact have Eustachian Tube Dysfunction. I have all your symptoms too. I've suffered this condition for over 30 years. My ears itch, ringing (tinnitus) and constantly blocked. I sometimes manage to pop mine too, but more often than not the tunes close up again. If you have got Eczema, lower in your ear canal, that would cause itching, but not blocking. May I ask what medication has been prescribed, also what country do you live in. If you suffer allergies, sinus issues and possibly post nasal drip and you hear crackling and popping, that's mucus in your tubes.

I've messaged you back. Would you advise whether you received it. I pressed Reply, I usually see my message once it's been sent. On this occasion I can't. Let me know and if you haven't, I'll re-send

Oh, that's good as mainly I'm speaking with people all over the US or Oz.
I'm at present using Flixonase nasules and they seem to be working.
However, only allowed to stay on these for a max of 6 weeks, as
they are a stronger steroid than the Flixonase Aqueous Spray.
In April this ETD got so bad I was prescribed a 20 day reducing course
of Prednisolone. They are wonderful and all syptoms disappeared
and even my smell and taste returned. A few weeks back on the
Aqeuous spray everything returned. Sinus headaches, post nasal
drip and blocked left ear. Even smell and taste went again. I saw
my ENT consultant who told me to use (keep them in my cupboard)
the Flixonase Nasules, like I've just said that I'm using at the moment.
So everything cleared up again. Inflammation with me must be so bad
to lose my sense of smell and taste, which I've got back all the while
I'm on the Prednisolone or Nasules....one week to go and I've got to stop
the nasules and symptoms will all return yet again,
What a nuisance this awful condition is and so debilitating too.
What part of the country do you live. I'm in Kent

Im from Scotland . I have had really low points due to all these problems . It sounds so trivial when someone asks what's wrong and I explain about etd but it affects my life so much . That and the exzema .

I know what you mean, however, unless people suffer this condition themselves they will
never know how awful it is.....even ENT consultants don't know !!
Please give the Prednisolone a try, but would definitely have to be the 20 reducing course.
You'll feel so much better after apprx. 5 days. Inflammation will go, to allow drainage.
Once you've finished the course, then go onto the Flixonase Nasules. You'll feel
wonderful when it's cleared up. Another lady on the forum took my advise, by memory I think
she's in the US and things are starting to clear, she was so grateful. I'm waiting to hear
back from her this week. When the eustachian tubes are left so long blocked, everyone
needs something strong to clear them. I've woken up with a very bad blocked left nostril,
so I'm about to administer the nasules, which in turn keeps my ear free of mucus and
inflammation.....it's so good to be about to smell and taste, to lose those senses for the
past 30 years has been miserable too. Because this condition isn't life threatening,
unless of course it turns into Bacterial Meningitis, as it did in my case, people think
blocked ear, big deal. But, as I've said a very miserable problem that drags us all day.
The Pneumococal Meningitis was caused by the thick sticky mucus sitting in my eustachian
tubes too long, turned bacterial, crossed the blood/brain barrier and bingo. I have to say
though, all those years ago when it happened, at that time I had the most horrendous
earache, which of course indicates infection present. I went on to lose the sight in my left
eye and hearing down in my right ear, plus dizzyness. So I try and advise people to get
this problem sorted. I must admit, I suffered years and years with ETD, but never an actual
earache, once that happened I knew I had an ear infetion and got myself to
see my GP. Quite a long story of what happened after that and I was in hospital for two
weeks. I would never want to go through that ever again, or potentially anyone else.
All the symptoms you have, I had too. I've had 6 perforations in my left eardrum this year,
when it happens, the mucus is so thick it can't drain through the tiny perforation. I then see
my ENT consultant, whom I've seen twice yearly since this illness. He then uses what's
called Microsuction and sucks all the mucky stuff out. Usually then on a course of antibiotics,
only if infection present.
On going for years and years and I myself have tried just about everything possible. I purchased
what's known as an EarPopper from Boots £100 and does not work. Some specialist operate
and use Balloon dilation, or even put tubes in, again to allow drainage. However, mine won't
do this for me having a chronic condition. ETD, Rhinitis and Allergies.
Take care and let me know what you decide to do.
