ENT Diagnosed with Thyroglossal Cyst, have some questions.

Hey everyone, hope you're all doing well!

First and foremost, apologies if this is the wrong group, but it is the only ENT group I can find on this website, the thyroid group seems to be relating specifically to diabetes and parathyroidism.

I got a super sore throat last week, but with no cough or other symptoms. I noticed my adam's apple area looked pretty big/swollen compared to usual, and had some inflamed lymph nodes in my neck/behind my ears, so I assumed I had some sort of nasty infection.

I got an emergency doctor's appointment because it was freaking me out, the referred me straight to A&E and then to ENT specialists, which had me more worried! ENT specialists performed a swift physical inspection, and confirmed that I have a thryoglossal cyst, that they suspect may have became infected. I have been told I will receive an appointment for a US scan in the post in the coming weeks, to get a proper look at the cyst, I have had blood tests, all have came back fine, with no warning signs of anything more sinister, which is good to know!

I just want to ask any of you who may have/had a thyroglossal cyst, a few questions about what happened next.

I have been prescribed two courses of anti biotics, one week of Co-amoxaclav, which I finish tomorrow, then a course of Penicllin. If this succesfully treats the infection, should I expect my swelling to reduce a little bit? The new, rather large appearance of my adam's apple has me a little self conscious rolleyes

Further more, any tips to reduce swelling in the mean time?

I know after my US scan I will be offered the chance to have surgery to have the cyst removed once and for all. Has anyone got any experience with this? How did you feel after, and do you think it was worth it? I know some people choose not to have surgery if their swelling does down, until the cyst becomes a problem again. Any reasons why some may choose not to go through with the surgery?

My current anti biotics, co amoxiclav, make me feel quite sleepy/lethargic, which isn't great because I have two jobs, one being a very active technical job, which can involve operating in/near large machines, and setting up large PA and lighting installations - which can be dangerous, and my other job is working FOH in a pizza place. Both of these jobs I need to be alert, is this just a general reaction to anti biotics? Will it necessarily be the same with the penicillin? This is the first course of anti biotics I have taken since being a small child.
