ENT said she suspects neuralgia?

Ive had some pain behind one ear (sometimes in front of ear) down the side of my neck and in to my shoulder and at the back of my head for Afew months now. Also at the same side I have the same kind of feeling in my jaw area. When I say pain, I mean this is more of a dull ache that is pretty much constantly there. Every now and then the pain at the back of my head is quite sharp for Afew seconds. Couple of months ago it was also tender to touch but that's eased off now. Ive been having massage which is helping slightly. I also get intermittent pain behind my eyes which might come every few weeks. The back of my head and neck is also very clicky when I turn my head. Been to see an ENT who said she suspects this is some kind of neuralgia pain. From reading other posts on here though it seems people get the sharp pains much more often- I hardly ever get these, it's more of a constant dull ache. Could this still be neuralgia?

    Hi Danielle

Mine started as just a slight sensitivity to the side of the face near the ear.

I ignored it and it wasn't till I went for an eye test over a year later that the technician said "Your left eyelid doesn't move and your eye stays open. Try to blink"

And that was it so it does creep up on you slowly in some cases.

Stay with the GP and ENT people and DRIVE THEM HARD to get a result. Most of them don't see TN too often to your job is RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH and then MAKE them respond.

If YOU don't drive them and be demanding they will let it disappear into a folder of papers and forgotten.

    Good Luck

    Hi,

It could be a type of Neuropathic pain, but not, perhaps, the Classic Trigeminal Neuralgia which is typified by the sharp stabbing pains (like a super hot knife with the added benefit of electrical current!). In my experience I actually thought the pains I'd been getting were Cluster headaches until it started to spread to my nose and gum/teeth on the same side. I then realised that I had been getting all manner of weird sensations predominantly on the left side of my head and face and to a lesser degree on the right. My GP has said it is TN due mainly to the fact that regular painkillers did absolutely nothing to lessen the pain, nor did Tramadol or Morphine!!

I now have more appropriate medication which has helped, but I still find that cold rain on my face triggers an attack, but then I also get the pains without any trigger, so.......

Anyhow, the advice given by Baudwalker is good advice. Ask your GP to refer you to a Neurologist. They are the best people to make a diagnosis.

    Good luck.

      Hi Sua=san

There are certainly  a wide range of symptoms and treatments.

I had no pain for 18 months just the left cheek became much more sensitive. Then they started and almost unbearable.

Shooting stabbing pains, massive headaches but ended up on ox carbamazipine and lyrica after many many experiments with other drugs none of which did the job

N eurologists are fine "IF" they are experienced. My lot seem to have been guessing or going round the houses "in case" they hit the nail on ther head.

Three CT SCans, 5 MRI's and TWO MORE booked for next Thursday, Ultra Sound and still no one is the wiser. I am scheduled to have a PET scan in April sometime. They have more pictures of my head and neck that the average professional photographer has .!!!!!

Just RESEARCH ans PERSEVERE Danielle. Make sure you are not fobbed off by any medico. MAKE THEM UNDERSTAND it, my guy started looking at the pages I was and all of a sudden became interested in what was happening and pro-active as well.

      GOOD LUCK
