Hi, could anyone please advice me how to reduce your alcohol consumption safely if you are having fits already. It's my husband, he is on epilin now. But he was strongly recommended to reduce or to get down to 0 alcohol consumption if he wants to be free of fits. Thank you.

    Hi gina,

This sounds very difficult to do and he may require professional help to succeed. He may need the help of a hospital environment to keep watch over him as he reduces the alcohol intake. This is what I suggest from having experience with helping people in a former job.

I wish you both the best outcome.

Alot depends on how much a person drinks and whether they have an alcohol problem, if the answer is alot and/or yes then the advice given that professional intervention/help is needed MUST be followed. Otherwise ask the GP on the best way forward as some GP surgeries now have links with alcohol reduction programmes and some large ones, like mine, run their own.

Thank you very much for your tips Tazschurch. I understand that he needs to go to specialist treatment detox facility. In fact Camden alcohol Service offered him one place in Holborn but both my husband and I was not really convinced that they will do a good job. Plus he reduces it on his own very well and does not show any side affects apart from fits.  Camden Alcohol Service said apart from detox in their facility they can't offer any other help, even any advice how to reducesafely  which was not very helpful at all.

Thank you very much for your tips. Have a nice day.

Then he may as well continue as he is for the time being as every drink not drunk will help.

With me the fits lessened as I drunk less but you must both be aware that once this link has been established you need to become teetotal. If I now have even one drink I have a fit.

Wishing you both the best on the journey ahead

      Hi Taz,

Thank you very much for your kindness and advice. It's relly nice of you to share your own experience with us. My husband is approaching 70 and he has drank all his life including whisky and hard spirits and he has a very good tolerance level.  He has a very good constitution as well.  Now he is drinking much less (was 4 strong lager 9% - reduced to 2.5 strong lager) as he started having fits and they have put him on Epilin. He is taking 300 gr per day.  Do you think it could be something else as well bringing on these fits, not necessarily alcohol. Or are you certain it's alcohol?  Neurologist doctors and nurces have n't been really convincing or certain themselves and they only tend to say what is acceptable to their protocol. Could I ask you please Taz if you have yourself been to the 2 weeks detox programme?  I just don't know what is best to my husband. Going to detox programme will on the contrary put him through a lot of stress and i'm not sure if that's the best way.

Tahnk you very much again for your wonderful advice,

      G

If he can do it himself that is possibly best. My GP refered me to our local support services rather than detox. I did not drink at all for 5yrs and can now have the occasional pint of Guinness as it does not affect me. There could be another cause but in a long term or heavy drinker alcohol needs ruling out first as it can cause chemical changes in the brain which can cause epilepsy

By the way I'm on Epilum too and Guinness was what my Dr said, she also said that some epileptics are OK with the occasional single whisky but that as with everything it is see, but to leave it 5yrs without drinking before try so get a proper idea. Meant to add that to second post along with fact can have occasional Guinness but nothing else.
