Episcleritis - Is it normal to require some pain relief?

Posted , 2 users are following.

I have had right eye redness and pain for 9 days now that was diagnosed by the GP as episcleritis. I haven't been given any treatment.

Is it normal to experience a sort of pulsing but infrequent pain around the affected eye as part of this condition?

At it's worst whenever I move my eye there is pain. It's not just uncomfortable, it is the real deal. With some pain relief (Ibuprofen) the worst of the pain subsides in around 45 minutes and at the moment is only returning 12-24 hours later.

Has anyone found any other remedies that could assist? It really is only pain killers that I've found can cut through the pain when it's at its worst. The rest of the time it is manageable. I'm practising good hygiene.

What concerns me slightly is that scleritis would appear to be more associated with pain but I'm not presenting with any other symptoms either systemically or locally and my vision is okay. I'm a 36 year old male and don't have any history of eye issues although I do wear glasses.

I have been checked by an optician who ruled out more serious conditions but he didn't arrive at the diagnosis of episcleritis. Instead he opted for 'allergy'. Neither the doctor or optician believed it was due to an infection but I have just finished a 5 day course of antibiotic ointment with no improvement (Dispensed by a nurse who saw it a few days in and suggested conjunctivitis.)

Any tips or comments would be warmly received.

Sounds like episcleritis. You've obviously been treated from all points of view including conjunctivitis.

Episcleritis has no known cause but sometimes its associated with a lot of stress in your life. The main treatment is NSAIDs like ibuprofen and also lubricating drops if you feel the eye is "scratchy". You can get these at most pharmacies/chemists.

It should clear up in about 3 weeks or less, but if it persists for longer do go back to your doctor, who may want to run further tests.

if it is extremely painful when the eye moves you could try a pad of lint over your eye and taping it across your face to keep the eye shut.
