Erectile Dysfunction after Urethrotomy - Help!

Hi,

I am hoping someone can help me. I am suffering from a strange form of erectile dysfunction following a urethrotomy, in that the shaft of my penis can get erect but the head is soft. I believe this is know as soft glans syndrome and is very disconcerting! I am in my late 30s.

3 weeks ago I had surgery to remove a cancer tumour from my bowel and whilst they were trying to put the catheter in they realised i had a stricture (which i wasn't aware of) and called in a urologist who managed to get the catheter in. It was very uncomfortable whilst i was in hospital recovering and, for the first few days, I had quite a lot of sharp pain in the perineum if I moved in a certain way in my hospital bed.

A week later i had a urethrotomy to treat the stricture problem and the surgeon said it went very well and the stricture was just a few mm long. He was confident this would be sufficient treatment to cure the problem. I kept the catheter in for 6 more days and it was finally taken out last Monday. I had a catheter for 2 weeks in total.

Since the catheter has been taken out I have had this strange erectile dysfunction, with an erection I also get a small amount of pain in the penis and perineum. Obviously, being Sunday now, it has only been a few days so my body is still recovering but I am extremely worried by this. I have tried to get hold of my surgeon but have been told that he is on holiday until January.

I'm desperate to know whether this is a short term complication or if I potentially have a serious problem. Please can anyone tell me if they've also had this issue following a urethrotomy and did it resolve itself?

Many thanks

    Hi Anthony9..,

To me it sounds as if some nerves in the area of the operation have been hurt, normally it would take a few weeks and grow back. if this state persists for more than 3 weeks then you may need to do a good check on it, with you surgeon(urologist) or look for second opinion

    wish you quick recovery

Thanks Alma. Thats good to know. Have you dealt with something like this previously?

I have read something similar like that but on a different case. They messed their own penis and burst some of their blood vessels and their glans does not inflate anymore.

I am not sure if it was caused by a nerve or a snapped blood vessel.

Inflammation can also be the cause. It can pinch any blood vessel as long as your glans does not discolored.

Another thing is anxiety. Sometimes, it can be caused by too much anxiety.

What I've mentioned there were just things I've just read from other people's experiences on other forums. I can't conclude what's really happened to yours.

Not the same problem but I have gone through urethrotomy as well. I suggest you to wait for couple of months for it to settle down. Because you had a fresh surgery and its been almost a week. Dont worry and make sure you dont feel any problem while urinating. try to avoid sex for few weeks untill everything becomes normal. Its common to have anxiety and you wanted to know whether you are normal to back but remember that its still a fresh surgery and since it is internal, you have to understand that its not as same as before your surgery. So no harm in waiting for it to become normal. If you get any issues in urinating, contact the doctors asap.

Thank you Victor. You are right, I should wait a while before getting too anxious. It is just difficult to stop myself. I will do my best.

      Hi,

Yes, it has improved but is still not quite what it was - maybe 80-85%. It's useable now but not an ideal situation. It's stayed like this for a few weeks now so not sure it's going to get any better.

Doc prescribed Cialis one a day which is what got it moving.

sounds like you have a positive future.

If you are getting 80-85% erection, then the hesitation of your erection is due to your penis recovering.
