Escitalopram vs Citalopram

Hello All,

Recently, I posted about having a set back , after two great weeks. I've come to realize, after thinking about my symptoms, my psych MD changed me from Escitalopram to Cit. I assumed I was taking Cit, when I was really taking Escit. I believe the set back may be the result of the rx change from Escit to Cit. While the dose is the same, I do feel my body is reacting to the change. I've been on the Cit for a month now.

Has anyone went from Escit to Cit? If so, what was your experience? Also, if anyone knows, what is the likely hood of having a reaction to the change in medication?

Feed back is much appreciated...thank you all!

I've been on both. For me, they've worked as two very different medications. I think you absolutely would have side effects from being switched from one to the other. I'm actually really surprised that your doctor would do that, especially if the escit was working well?

One thing to note is that the dosages are not the same. The highest dose of Citalopram (40mg) is the equivalent of 20 mg of Escitalopram. So, that could definitely throw you for a loop as well, if you were prescribed the exact same dose from one to the other.

      Hi Kelly,

Thank you for the great information. I was having a difficult time with the escit start up. In hindsight, I think the psych doc shouldve advised me to stay on the escit longer.

Basically, I would need a higher dose of cit to equate the escit dose ?

      Thanks again,

      paulina
