Esmya Tablets

hey there

for over 10 years i have had fibriods. they burn them out put coil in then about 2 years later they grow back.

i am 42 and do not want any children now. my womb isn't the right shape to have womb lazered so now my gyne has put me on these tablets.

do they really stop the bleeding?? i bleed about 2 weeks a month with usually 4 to 5 days of horrific flooding. hate going anywhere when i am bleeding.

i am fat so don't think they want me to have hysterectomy.

would like to know if it really makes a difference to the bleeding??

also how bad is the bleeding when on your break??

i really have had enough of it all now just want it to stop. really makes me sad and dark at times.

just want a normal life.

any information would be great

thank you

    Dear Louise,

What do you mean by you are fat so your does want recommend Surgery? Are they Concerned about other health risks? Make sure you talk to multiple docs. Many are "hand-tied" because of the fear of litigation, not knowing techniques for controlling blood loss during Surgery, financial disincentives (same $ from insurance whether you do a 3hr fibroid extraction or a 45min hysterectomy) & errors. However, rather than confess their hindrances they steer you toward their preferences which may not Cure you.

I don't know if you are referring to the copper coil or stuff like mirena that releases hormones. Fibroids thrive on hormones generally speaking. if you have had a hormone releasing coil inserted to curb your bleeding you could've fed your fibroids the food they need to multiply. Before I used my IUD I had a large fibroids. About six years into using an IUD a lazy doc and radiologist they told me I had "numerous" fibroids. Somehow they multiplied. of course I can't blame my IUD because with all our female hormones lack of focused studies on causes of fibroid in the uterine environment. Lucky them.

when I finally met a knowledgeable doc he counted 13 with me in his office on the MRI.- He pointed them out after explaining to me how to see them on the film. He cautioned there could be more when he went in since parts of my MRI were unclear cos I moved. Surgery day he took out 13.

find the right doc. Consider a myomectomy since you are 42 and you have a precondition for heart disease. Yes,there's evidence that the uterus has get to be specified role in reducing risk of stroke and coronary heart disease, especially before 49. Search the scientific literature from the 2000s.

Don't give up. I know how you feel. Best of luck my fellow woman!

      hey May

i am around 240 pounds so a big lady.

i am in the UK so its the NHS that are saying i now have to go onto these tablets.

for about 5 years i have had mirena coil in. that stopped the bad bleeding for about 2 years then they grow back have them removed and coil put back in.

just so worried that these tablets will not stop the bleeding??

also how bad will the bleeding be when i have my break??

also now i have the coil out can't have any horomome contraception so at 42 back to using condoms. i know not a big deal but just so frustrating. was hoping i would be getting to the point that wouldn't have periods anymore

      thanls louise xx

    Hi Louise,

I see. I weighed 231 lbs when I had my fibroids removed. My doc did not even mention it as a risk factor. I was also taking the highest dose of blood pressure medication (Nifedipine) because of (drum roll) mirena. be careful with the hormone pills my dear. i developed blood pressure 6 months after starting mirena. ok. maybe coincidence. i only needed the lowest dose of lisinopril to control it. it worked. i removed it for a three year period. then i reinsert it from 2015. In 2017 September i became a walking massive stroke waiting to happen. f ive things happened. i dropped 30lbs in 2 weeks. no sickness. nothing. my blood pressure jumped to an average of 180/140. no stress. in fact life was good. third problem- the blood pressure was erratic. if i stood up from a chair the systolic go from day 160 to 190 in a second. i was on stroke watch. fourth, the docs ran every scan and checked every blood vessel, my heart, my brain, kidneys, and other organs. one doc said to me "if i did not have you admitted here i would think the scans and blood work belonged to someone else in their 20s." fifth- no bp med was working. only the max dose of nifedipine was working some. it reduced my blood pressure to 160/100. yup. guess the only things they did not check? my sex hormones. long story short. i became a doctor in a week. in one of the top three hospitals in the USA i had to save my life because the doctors are rekling on data that does not include folks like me . i demanded the mirena pulled. it came out Nov 30 2017. Dec 1 my BP measurement (Systolic) came down to 120 for the first time in close to 8 weeks. fear hormones.

best of luck. may you find relief from this horrible disease.

    Hi Louise,

I can relate to so much of your story and really feel for you - especially when you say you just want it all to stop and it makes you feel sad and dark at times. Yes, this is exactly how I am feeling at the moment. I have tried all kinds of drug - both hormonal and non-hormonal. I was prescribed Esmya for a three-month course last year in advance of scheduled hysterectomy (which I ended up cancelling). I can only speak for myself but for those three months, I stopped bleeding completely - no breakthrough bleeding or even spotting (unlike my subsequent experiences with progestin therapy). As I understand it, Esmya doesn't add any more hormones into your system, but works on the pituitary gland to affect how you respond to the progesterone you produce naturally.

Like you, I was very nervous about what the bleed would be like after the three months, but as I recall it was pretty much like a normal period - 6 days of light-to-medium bleeding, no excessive cramping or flooding. However, when I went to get a repeat prescription for the next round, my GP informed me it had been withdrawn from use due to health concerns. Perhaps it has been made available again?

I would certainly take it again, if given the chance. As it is, I am scheduled for endometrial ablation in a couple of weeks (is this what you meant by having your womb lasered?), so hopefully, that will be the end of it and I can be medication-free for the rest of my fertile life, and allow my hormone levels to fall naturally as I approach the menopause.

Good luck with it all - I hope it gives you the release and freedom you desire so you can get your life back on track xx
