Hello I'm 44 and have recently been diagnosed with a 11cm Fibroid, my Gyno has put me on Esmya to try and shrink the fibroid, I just wondered if any one could me advice or their review as its fairly new treatment and can't find anyone who has tried it.

Thank you

I have been on Esmya for 2 months.  There are quite a lot of minor side effects, but I can cope with this.  My fibroids are quite big (about size of 5 months plus pregnant).  I have noticed a very small change only, maybe a little flatter, so far.  For those of you who have taken a full 3 months, when did you notice the most change.  Also is there anyone who has taken a 2nd 3 months and did that produce any further improvement.

Hello i am surprised to see how many of you decided to have a operation and not a embolisation. Not even one of you had it in consideration i don t know why, maybe  because your doctors didnt tell you about it so they can cut all day and have their nice litle hands bussy with masacrating our body. Maybe i sound a litle bit hard but i am starting to hate doctors, i lost a pregnacy with 25 weeks because of a fibroid after visiting 3 doctors in germany and a specialist in vien who told me that i have nothing to worry even though i was bleading a litle in some days and some times very hard. I come from romania and i didn t trust the tehnology in my country thinking it doesnt exist and trusted the specialist in very known clinics in austria and germany even thoug the 4 doctors who had saw me in romania, all said it s very dangerous and i will probably bleed a lot and lose the babything that really happend. i started to bleed like crazy and i am not exagerating but it was in my pants in my showes and a lot on the floor so i had a emergency op and my soon didnt make it he was to litle sad((( of course this was not all, after this experience i am having panic atac and anxiety almost every day the only thing that helps me is xanax. Sorry about the long story but i wanted to tell you girls my experience with doctors who i haved asked not 1 time hundred of times if i can have a baby with this fibroid inside and all the specialists said no problem. thsi maybe its not your case but hyserectomy its a hard op and my opinion is that you should think first embolisation and if doesnt work then you can try the op. the embolisation it s made by a radiolog thats why the gyno doesnt rcomended because then they would have nothing to cut, just please have a look about what embolisation means and how its made, it takes 1 day in the hospital no cuts and a litle pain nothing compared with a op. about esmya , iwant to try it too and that would be the last thing i try , if doesnt work i will have the embolisation and finish with this monster a fibroid 5cm who gives me a lot of bleeding and pain..good luck to all of you

      Hi Alina1.stefy

I had my fibroids embolised and I have to say it was one of the most painful things I have ever had done. sad

I appeared to work and there may have been a few cm's shrinkage. But a few years on, my fibroid is still 18cms x 16cms. It's hard and uncomfortable. I also tr

Oops massage sent without being finished!

I was saying, I also tried Esmya late last year, and I had some side effects, hot flushes, achey joints, confusion and dizziness.  The tablets did not improve my fibroids sad

I asked about myomectomy and they won't do it as my fibroid is too large...

I have however found a surgeon who is willing to try to do a hysterectomy by keyhole surgery and am awaiting my op date, which should be soon now.

So, I have fought this all the way, tried all the other options - and even tho it pains me to say it, I wish I'd had a hysterectomy 4 years ago when the 'thing' was a fraction of the size it is now.

Just a note on the embolisation - I'd always had back ache when standing up for short periods of time - after the embolisation, this improved 100 %, and even tho my fibroid is huge now and I have lots of other symptoms from it, I don't get back ache! So that's something I guess!

Good luck on your journey with this, it's a tough one, and now even tho I am scared to death about having an op, I cannot wait to have energy and a life again. And be rid of this bowling ball in my stomach. sad x

i am sorry that didnt work i know in some cases it doesnt ,maybe depends also by the size and also were it s located and that the embolisation is painfull i know i jst thought its better to sufer for some days that choose a hysterectomy that i dont know exacly what other changes the body feels after this but in some cases i am sure that thats the only way. i am also sure that embolisation helped a lot of women with this problem and i hope maybe can help me too because iam 25 years 2 lost pregnacy 2 op and veryy low chances to have another baby but at least i would be happy if i can have all my organs inside smile and stop with the bleading because its making me crazy and week. And don t be scared about the op i am sure after a litle bit you will feel normal and have the energy that you want , you should think every time at the life you can have after this op and be strong and brave GOOD LUCK and sorry if my english its not 100% corect ,)

      Hi Tigrou1974!

I also had an embolization and experienced the same as you; my back ache disappeared, the fibroid shrunk about 2 cm but is still very big.

Now I have finished my 3 months on Esmya and still waiting to get a check up to see if my fibroid is smaller or still the same size. My side-effects were very manageable, just som minor pain in muscles and joints. I also got a little tired and had some strange colored vaginal discharge, but no bleeding.

I don't really think Esmya has done anything for me but I'll just wait and see. My doctor has promised me that a myomectomy can be done, so i guess that will be my next move if the Esmya pill hasn't worked. Now I'm just tired of this big lump in my body and want to get rid of it (but still keep my uterus intact). Tigrou1974; you should try to get a second opinion about myomectomy! It should be possible for an experienced surgeon to remove your fibroid without doing a full hysterectomi.

A question to all of you who have tried Esmya; did you get your period back after you stopped taking it? After only two weeks I started bleeding, not like a real period but just a little more than spotting. It never stopped and now I've started to bleed a little bit more. Did anyone of you experience bleeding like this after you stopped taking Esmya? This is driving me nuts! I'll ask my gynachologist about it when I get my check up, but I would like to hear from any of you ladies if you have experienced this or just got right back to your normal periods.

I finished my 3 month course of Esmya last weekend but my hysterectomy isn't until 22nd Sept. I have a history of horrendous heavy bleeds leading to unconsciousness and having blood transfusions, iron infusions etc (last episode was 2 weeks ago when still taking Esmya and I lost so much blood my systolic BP dropped to 50!) Just wondered if anyone else had to wait this long for the op and if you were given anything to prevent that first period (Norethisterone, mini pill etc). I am terrified that I am going to end up in A & E yet again (been in 4 times now since May) before the operation.

Hi all, really interseting reading.. I have a large posterior fundal fibroid around the size of a grapefruit and have had all the scans and tests, and I am Tranexanmic Acid, which makes me feel nauseous. I am on the waiting list for open Hsyterctomy, having been told that my fibroid and uterus-which is 17cms is too large for keyhole surgery. Whilst I am waiting, I have been offered GnRH therapy, but I am confused about the difference between that and Esmya? Can anyone tell me the difference?

    Thanks

I think that Esmya blocks progesterone receptors and is given as a tablet once a day (meant to be less side effects) and GnRH therapy decreases oestrogen production and is given as an injection once a month? I think it causes more menopause type side effects?? Not sure whether one works better than the other for reducing size of fibroids but I know I would rather take 1 tablet a day that I could stop taking if I needed to. I have only had a few mild side effects from Esmya, headaches for first few days to a week of taking it and slight dizziness. I also had a couple of major bleeding episodes resulting in hospital stays and transfusions etc but I think without the Esmya they would have lasted a lot longer. Tranexamic Acid works for me to some degree but doesn't stop the haemorrhaging and it upsets my stomach! Maybe you could get your GP to contact your consultant to ask about different options. Hope everything works out for you.

Hi, I have just read your post, and was wondering did you take esmya at the same time as tranexamic acid? I took a course of esmya at the beginning of the year and it reduced the size of the fibroids, I have just started my second 3 month course but feel I need the tranexamic acid to. My iron is low and just don't want it to get worse.

Hello just saw post and thought share my thought . You taking esmya and you still got heavy periods? . In my case and in general too ( doctor said to me) , when you take esmya your periods either stop or may be minimum bleeding so you don't need tranexamic acid . Because doctor usually suggest tranexamic acid when u want to minimise your bleeding . If you had iron deficiency you can take iron tabs. I had three course of esmya in past two years for redusing fibroids , didn't worked for me at all but during course my heavy periods was nearly stopped. Now I had fibroid emboilasation . Hope this helps

      Hi Lyn

I had my hysterectomy in June and it's the best thing I could have had done so try and be strong I know it's scarey but they will look after you and get you through it. I had fibroids and was bleeding for 15 months. I was on norethisterone on and off to give me a break. The esmya didn't stop my bleeding but I was on it for 3 months to shrink uterus to make the removal of fibroids easier. Please message me if you want to chat it helps when you've got enough support.

      Hi Lynn

I had similar symptoms to you with the main culprit being 10cm fibroid just above my cervix and uterus same size as yours. I had a hysterectomy in January this year and it was the best thing I ever did! I had no life prior to surgery - pain, blood clots, horrendous haemorrhaging, pills, pads Etc. Although I was anxious about the surgery I knew it would benefit me in the long run. As Mandy says, the hospital will take care of you and you won't be in there too long. The hysterectomy association is a really food website to check out. With great info and lots of women in similar situations to yourself, waiting for surgery and lots that have had it.

You'll be fine - you'll feel like brand new woman!! Big hugs xx

      Hi Lynn,

I had a laparoscopic hysterectomy at the start of this year and as sporty chica said it was also the best thing for my situation. I had a couple of large fibroids (11x9cm and 8x6) and took Esmya for 3 months.  I was in hospital for 2 days then driving and back to work within 4 weeks.

The hysterectomy association was a great support and help. (I was a January jellybean).

All in all a lot easier than I was expecting and now living my life again.

Best wishes to you x x
