Hello I'm 44 and have recently been diagnosed with a 11cm Fibroid, my Gyno has put me on Esmya to try and shrink the fibroid, I just wondered if any one could me advice or their review as its fairly new treatment and can't find anyone who has tried it.

Thank you

    Hi Melanie

I too had a laparoscopic Hysterectomy at the beginning of this year due to a large fibroid and horrendous bleeding. Best decision ever made and I like sporty chica  joined the Hysteroctomy association (January jellybean!) a great support.

Out of hosp in 2 days and back at work and driving within a month. All in all no regrets and living my life again.

Please don't worry if this is your choice of treatment.

HI there I am 45 and also have just been presscribed this treatment for the shrinking of a 12cm fibroid or as my gynae said to me the size of a small galia melon! I am too interested to learn about side effects. Think I should try it as I dont have many other options open?

    Melanie,

I have a 9 cm Fibroid which used to be only 5 cm about a year ago.  I started taking Esmya during my period last month and had a very heavy flow.  I haven´t missed a day, and this month I just had another period with a heavy flow (as usual...change an extra absorbant tampon every 40 minutes to an hour) for five full days. I was so excited about the idea of not having a period this month, but I guess it hasn´t had that side-effect for me.  The first few days I had some weird side-effects, but after that nothing (gas, migraine, and fatigue).  Now I keep taking the pills but don´t notice any real difference.  I suppose I am a bit bloated (which I was anyway), and I seemed to have gained a tiny bit of weight even though I eat well and go to the gym regularly (we´re talking 1 kilo).  I am supposed to take them for three months and then i will see if the fibroid has shrunk....I hope so!  As for the operation, they want to do a hysterectomy (partial where I keep the ovaries). I am 43 so I don´t want more kids and I think even if the fibroid is 5 centimeters, they tend to do the hysterectomy over the myomectomy or embollization (depending on where it/they are located).    Good luck and I hope that helps!

    Hi,

I too have Fibroids and am taking Esmya.  I found the first twelve days made me feel the best I've felt in years, but the last three days the period pain has been driving me crazy.  I also have asthma so Ibuprofen is out of the question.  I went and saw our pharmacist today and he said to take paracetamol with codine, which has just taken the edge off the pain.  I'll keep going for a couple of days and see if it eases.  I would be interested how you got on as the post says it was over a year ago.  Apart from indigestion and wind this is the first side effect!  I hope your problems are all sorted now.

Hi everyone. nice to see a new post, but thought i would add my thoughts also. For the last month I had been taking the pill and norethisterone as I was bleeding a lot and this was suppose to ease the period, instead it did the opposite.  I've either had the very heavy clotted bleeding or light blood discharge. 7 days ago stopped all the pills and started on Esmya. The first few days were awful was birthing enormous clots for 3 days, then was bleeding and now today passing clots again. I read somewhere if you continue to bleed for 10days after taking esmya, you need to go to the doctor. I was hoping that its the Esmya making the fibroids shrink and all the blood around them has to come out, but this is probably wishful thinking.

on a good note, not really had any side effects. wink

what i should have said is no other side effects. I am hoping that the bleeding will stop soon and that this bleeding is just the uterus trying to figure out what its doing.

Hi fibroidy, sorry to hear about the bleeding, I should get it checked if I were you, it doesn't sound right.  Were you told to start Esmya on the third day of your period?

I've been in hospital for a day and a night with the pain and the outcome was that the fibroid was breaking down which caused the pain.  It seems they run out of blood and start to disintegrate, I guess they either come out or are reabsorbed they weren't really clear at the hospital.  It's good to know what caused the pain, I think it will carry on being painful until they have gone!  frown  If you have any worries keep going back, it seems to be a new drug and not well known so make someone listen, look it up and help you!  Good luck

Hi Annick, hope your pain is easing up. are you also taking Esmya ? i guess if they are disintigrating, at least you are rid of them. The bleeding has stopped now so hopefully things will seetle down and no more periods while on them. The consultant just told me to start taking them as soon as i get them. I did pass something very odd looking, a few days after i started taking them, was wondering if it could be a bit of fibroid but there was no pain. i do feel less full in the stomach so hoping the esmya is working.

Hi Annick, saw your post but over a year ago that you were in hospital with pain whilst on esmya. How did it turn out for you? You put that they were able to tell you in hospital the fibroids were breaking down causing the pain. Was that via an ultrasound scan?     I wonder if that is happening to me, have just finished 3 months worth and gonna have a break ( they are now licensed for longer intermittent use so can start them again in 2 months), but still getting pain and wonder if it is because they are working and breaking them down a bit ? My pain makes it uncomfortable sitting on a hard chair, but everyone is affected differently I know.

i had a UAE in May 2014, and am back next week after an MRI to hear how things have changed for me.  It is the best thing i ever did, my periods have returned to how they were when I just started age 13/14.

I read with interest about them breaking down or beaing reabsorbed, i never actually asked what happened, i have experienced nothing coming away.  however, my tummy still looks enormous and i have been having a deep lower back ache.  The downside is my womb may have died or i have a prolapse?.

    Hi

I have been diagnosed with a fibrome as they call them here in France anf have been taking Esmya for three months my periods have finally stopped I have to go back for a scan to see if it has shrunk as before it was 12cm apparently according to the Dr it was the biggest he had ever seen. I am hoping to still try for children even though I am older I am going to have to wait and see I do not want a hysterectomy.

I have been very emotional and crying lots and feel more tired than usual. is that normal oh and I have put on weight even though I am a sports teacher and work out alot downside of the medication maybe??

Hi there from the UK. I am also on Esyma, currently on my 3rd and final pack, then a few weeks after will be having open myomectomy for largest fibs, bigggest one is 11cm. I won't be having a scan before the surgery, they just go straight in, you should not only have the choice of a hysterectomy.

I've not had any side effects from the medication. But do feel down sometimes but feell this is just me worrying about the upcoming surgery.

Hi, I'm on Esyma, just on my last two weeks of the three months pack.  Apart from my periods stopping I get occasional period type pain but not enough for painkillers.  I did go into hospital with terrible pain, but a scan showed that it was the fibroid breaking down, it was only a couple of days.   Your fibroid is quite large so maybe you're just tired and run down, also Esyma blocks the production of progesterone which could affect you too.  I know someone who had a baby whilst she had fibroids.  Sorry you're having a hard time, hope you feel better soon.

Hi Annick, forgot to say above, i'm on the last 3 weeks of the 3 month supply. what are your plans after you finish ? I will be having surgery and quite disappointed i will not be scanned prior as really wanted to see if they had got smaller, but suppose they will see when they get them out. lol.

Hi Fibroidy, I need to go and see my consultant in the next couple of weeks to discuss plans.  My fibroids seem to be breaking down so hopefully I won't need surgery.  There was talk of taking it for another three months if it suited me, which thankfully it does.  Can you ask for a scan first?  It would be a shame to have the trauma of surgery if you can avoid it.  It would also be cheaper for the health service to give you another three months Esyma than a op!  Good luck with whatever you end up doing, I hope it goes well for you.

wow, i did not know they could actually break down, thats great for you. i have not had any pain so don't think thats happening.  I am at the mercy of the nhs (free health care here in the UK, so can't complain, its all good) - i did ask if they would scan before the op and they said no, as they know the esmya works. Then i said can i have more Esmya to stay on up right up to the op date - again they said no as they do not see it being more effective even if taken longer. I believe 6 months is the most you can take it for. Good luck wth the consultant

Thanks its cra being a woman isnt it lol. when I had the original investigative op the consultant said he was hoping to take away some small pieces of the fibriod but it was too big. So hence why I am on the medication for 6 months. Just have to wait and see what happens I guess hope it shrinks thats all I ask. Have been very hormonal feel like I am constantly about to start my period bloaty and yuk.

Thanks for your reply. I am not surprised that you are worried about your upcoming surgery I was panicling about my little investigation op. but was in an out in a day. I hope that yours go ok I am surprised that they are not going to scan you before the op but good old NHS. Good luck though.
