Hello I'm 44 and have recently been diagnosed with a 11cm Fibroid, my Gyno has put me on Esmya to try and shrink the fibroid, I just wondered if any one could me advice or their review as its fairly new treatment and can't find anyone who has tried it.

Thank you

Esmya didnt worked for me at all. I had three courses in last two year of time. last two years i had two ultrasound to check the size( shows my fibroid size around 7cm ) wether its redused in size but no ..they didnt.but the advantage was healthwise i was really good because my horrible periods was stopped during course time.  later dr gave me MRI scan option .and depending on the result  two options either hysterectomy or fibroid embolasation . MRI gave me real size of fibroid 14cm and end with doing fibroid emboilsation.

How did you get on with the Fibroid embolisation UFE ? DId it help for you?

After first course of esmya I was feeling  better because my heavy periods stopped and in ultra sound it shows they are shrinking so we continued taking another course . And then one more. No change in size of fibroids at all only benefited no periods during course. Later when periods are not stopping at all  then we moved for another solution. she said  I have two options either I need to embolisation or  Hysterectomy. I was not in favour of hysterectomy . Fibroid embolasation decision is depend on position and size of fibroid and is taken by not gynaecologist but by  interventional radiologist. He or she will decide on the basis of your MRI scan.

i had my procedure in end of November . My first period after procedure was agin very horrible like dr said . Now after six months again one more ultra sound and hopefully they will shrink to 50% . And also they predicted my periods will go normal eventually. So waiting for result.  Hope this will help

Thanks for sharing this Mina. Did you get the embolisation on the NHS in the UK ?

Hi Melanie, my 19 year old had an 11.5cm sub mucosal fibroid, gets her 6th injection of Zoladex (Esmya) on Wed prior to surgery to remove. She has experienced hot flushes, low mood, anxiety and insomnia. That said none of the side effects were anywhere near as bad as the horrific cramping and bleeding that led to 3 pints of blood transfused. I think my daughter is relieved and pleased with the treatment. Her fibroid has also shrunk considerably. Hope this helps

    hi Melanie,

I note your message was posted over a year ago and I hope that Esmya had worked or you? I myself just completed the first three months and will be taking another Ultrasound this week.

Hi Cloud, saw your comment re esmya, I have also completed three months and not sure it has done anything. I have the option to take again in a couple of months. I wonder if a second course will help. Will you be taking another course if your fibroids havent shrunk at all or much ? I finished the course 20 days ago and no sign of a period yet for me. It can take up to a month though.

      Thanks, M

Hi, just wanted to add my experiecne. i have taken 2 courses of the drug, a year apart and while on it my fibroids shrunk by about 30% and my period stopped. my period came back exactly one month after completing it. The fibroids grew back to the original size during the year i was off it.

Thanks for sharing that comment, it is helpful to know different experiences. What you describe is how I expect the drug to work (if it does, work and this is different for everyone). It is only supposed to shrink for the time you are on it and that effect may last up to 6 months or more but eventually go back to what they were. When yours shrunk by 30% was there a pain reduction , or maybe you did not get pelvic pain from your fibroids, some get heavy periods and pelvic pain some get one of each.

I have the option to start again after a 2 month break maybe for more results. The stopping of period is the main benefit you get from this tablet I suppose as shrinking is not guaranteed but they say research shows it does in most cases.

my periods did return to being as heavy as they were before so there was no benefit there, but my stomach was noticable smaller and i did not get bloated and look 5 month pregnant. so this was good even if only short lived. I first took it pre op. but due to positon of fibs they could not be removed during the myomectomy. Are you in the UK, as like you say in the other post, esmya is now licensed for intermittent use. I would happily take it again in 6 months when which my fibs seem to grow back to 5 month pregancy size.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Yes I am in the UK, I will take again in two months time, my second set of treatment.  You do get spoiled not having a period when on them. It will be 3 months without a period for me after taking first dose.

I know the feeling. i only have  3 pills left of this 2nd 3 month course, its been bliss. I've not had a period since mid Oct, So dreading next month when it comes back ! Also have a consultant appointment willl see if any chance of a 3rd course at some stage, as my consultant only offered hysterectomy (as already tried a myomectomy). Its such an expensive drug and been getting it on NHS so far so will see what happens.

I think the GP is going to have to deal with the cost in my case.

Because I said I was in agreement to intermittent use of esmya but not a hysterectomy the consultant has discharged me back to the GP with the recommended plan of esmya ongoing with reviews. I can always  be referred back to gynae if things worsen. The GP therefore will take the cost I presume. The gynae only gave me a prescription for my first 28 days with the remainder to be issued by the GP when I had the first 3 month dose.     Do you get any pelvic pain? That is my main concern.

Ok, thats interesting, sounds like u r one step ahead of me.  I think at this next appointment i will probably be discharged from the gynae consultant , back to the GP as i am going to refuse a hysterectomy also. My gp prescribed the full 3 motnh course both times. I didn't get any pelvic pain, just very heavy bleeding with massive clots and a huge belly so i looked 5 month pregant.
