Hello I'm 44 and have recently been diagnosed with a 11cm Fibroid, my Gyno has put me on Esmya to try and shrink the fibroid, I just wondered if any one could me advice or their review as its fairly new treatment and can't find anyone who has tried it.

Thank you

Thanks, Melanie, and girls, for sharing.

I was surprised that some of you had been taking Esmya for so long? I was told that 6 months is the max with a month break in between. I have an Ultrasound appointment next Monday following the first 3-months of Esmya; the plan so far is to continue for a further 3 months as they seem to have worked for me. After that will switch to Zoladex injections. If at all avoidable I wouldn’t want to have a full surgical removal

Hi Cloud . I am the same and looking to avoid surgical removal. 5

I accidentally pressed the button before finishing ! I was going to add that Esmya has now had its licence upgraded in Europe for 'intermittent longer use' not just pre-op and not just 2 uses. There have been new studies to show no harmful effects. Its on the internet if you search and I found out before seeing the consultant so was aware. The studies I think go up to 4 times, however a Dr said to me it can now be longer term as long as you need with at least 2 month gaps. I am not sure I would do that though. It is useful that you can now take at least up to 4 times if it is suitable for you. Glad its working for you.

Hello I'm new to this group , I'm 40 and being using Esmya for a month now , I do get lots of headache and very tired , I'm hoping this will pass . I really have no one I can talk to because most of my friends just stopped coming around and I really feel alone . My op is May so I'm hoping for the best . It's really hard to be positive . Sorry I'm so grim xxx

Hi Connie, I took esmya for 3 months had a 2 months gap and have just restarted again. When first taking you do get ocassional headaches and tiredness can come and go. It should ease up. Are you having an operation of some sort then? or are you going to see if the esmya eases up things. It really depends on how severe your symptoms are, and whether it is the heavy periods or pain that you are having. Everyone is so unique and results with esmya are varied. I have not had the result I want yet on pain but they definitely will ease up periods. They stopped whilst on them (after the first month) and were then lighter in the 2 month gap. So if you are prone to being anaemic that will help. I dont know if they have reduced them in size yet as am just going by symptoms and have not had another scan yet. Share your experiences on here, there are many women experiencing these problems.  Are you worrying about the op you have agreed to have ?

I find that it works better for me to take the esmya tabs a few hours before bed, as they make you a bit tired, and then you can sleep through the worst of it. They also make you tired for bed too. I also take not long after eating  or just after a meal as well. I found taking on an empty stomach gave me a headache once.

    Hi

I have been diagnosed with uterine fibroids and my gynaecologist has put me on a 3 month course of Esmya . I am currently 3 weeks into treatment and feeling fine apart from about 5lb weight gain and feel bloated. Has anyone else experienced this and does this side effect pass as your body gets adapted to the medication?

Hi there,  I have experienced bloating  on and off. I am on my second course of esmya.  Its difficult to know if this is the fibroids  or certain times of the month causing this or the tablets, but it is likely to be the tablets as it is one of the possible side effects. On searching for information, I have found a comment that when fibroids are breaking down that can cause a swelling in the uterus so I thought that can be one explanation. All we can do is hope that the tablets are reducing in size. I just hope this is happening but how long it takes to get a beneficial result is the next question. Both fibroids and side effects from esmya can be pelvic pain, so it just seems to be guess work and a lot of hope.  I think you do get used to the medication though. Good luck.

Thanks for that Shell. It's reassuring to know that others are experiencing similar symptoms! So do you find that the bloating comes and goes? As I said this is only my third week and really don't know what to expect? There doesn't seem to be much info on Esmya when you try to research.

Really appreciate your advice. Hopefully Esmya will be successful for us both . 😀

Hi glen, yes I do think the bloating comes and goes. I hope yours does. I agree, lets hope we get some good results, it might just take time. I am going to finish this second dose  of 3 months that I am only 2 weeks into.

Hello, first i would like to thank u all  for sharing your experiences. I am 36 and have been using esmya for three months time but didnt see any results. During my gyno exam I was informed that my fibroids didnt shrink in size but grew. I didnot bleed during these three months time. I had heavy bleeding before using esmya. I gained weight and felt bloadted most of the days. I found out that i had fibriods after a fertility examination, I have been trying to get pregnant but nothing happened, I am informed that one of my fibroids lies on fundus and another on the fallopian tube, i have others hanging outside the uterus and inside.the size of my biggest fibroid is 5.6 cm. I will have an MRI exam next week as it was hard to know exactly how many fibroids i have and which treatment is ok with my dreams of having kids.

Hi laila - Good luck with the MRI , hopefully that will show things up clearly so you know what you are dealing with. My largest one happens to be 5.5cm, its subserosal - on the outside of the uterus. I am not looking to have kids though I just want to get through with minimal treatment.  I did have a hysteroscopic resection for the one inside the uterus - those affect the bleeding mostly apparently and are called submucosal.  I wonder what gynae exam you had for them to tell you it grew?  Was it an ultrasound scan

Hi Shell, thank you confused I can't wait until next week.  had ultrasound scan. my first gyno informed me that I have fibroids all over however was not sure how many. I tried with another and was told i have three and was put on esmya to shrink the fibroids. After my last ultrasound scan I was informed that they grew in size and that I might have more fibroids as it was hard to see clearly. My expectations were that esmya will work in shrinking those fibroids but didnt work for me.I was informed to keep on trying for pregnancy but I thought it will be hard when i have my fibroids sitting on fundus and fallopian tube so felt like it is better to get treatment before trying to have kids but I have as well that these surgeries might creat other negative side effects.

      Hi Shell69386

I'm really interested in the fact that you had a hysteroscopic resection as they don't seem that common. I have a 7cm submucosal fibroid and I'm on day 20 of ESMYA. My consultant is aiming for 2 treatments and then hopefully a resection. How was the procedure? What size was your fibroid when they did it? Was there a lot of bleeding or pain afterwards? Any info you could share would be great. Thanks.

      Hi Caz,

My submucosal one was 2cm, I think they can do this procedure only if they are reasonably small - perhaps under 4cm ( approx.?) and of course only if submucosal, ( they cannot get to the intramurals or subserosals that way). That is probably why you are on esmya as well to try to reduce the size of it first before the procedure.  After the procedure I think there was a bit of bleeding for a few days but some women have this done with local anaesthesia and I asked for general I'm afraid. Because of that you have a bit of time getting over the anaesthetic and everyone reacts differently to that. I was a bit sick afterwards and my blood pressure went low but because I could not eat for that period of time. You cannot eat from midnight the night before and then your body is given anaesthesia and other mild pain relief drugs so no wonder you feel sick etc afterwards. I have not had any children and thought it would would be more painful for me thats why I chose general. (1st time I had had general as well ). I also had an endometrial biopsy at the same time.  I did have mild pain afterwards for some weeks but that might be me, I have pelvic pain anyway so it could have exacerbated that. Some people don't have it for as long. The expected recovery states one to two weeks.  It was probably worth getting it out. There was an effect on the periods they were slightly lighter for me. I am now on my second course of Esmya to help reduce the others.

      Good luck.

Hi Laila - How did you get on. I know you said you dont know how many. I actually dont know how many intramurals I have but I am just hoping esmya is helping. I am wondering if the drug does need a bit of persistence as I am now on the second course, as after the first course I did not get much of a result. Had a two month break and am a third of the way through it again. Touch wood I am in a good phrase. I get bad weeks and then better weeks up and down so dont know if it is working or not until I get more prolonged periods of good.  Its good not having any periods whilst you are on them.  You said they didnt work for you. Can I ask how long you took them for?

Thanks again Shell. I too would probably opt for a general anaesthetic. I've had one before and was OK but it does take several days at least to get out of your system.

Good luck with your 2nd course of ESMYA.

Hi Shell, sorry was not Active.hope all is going well for you.I had an MRI and was informed that i hv over 7 fibroids. Largest is 4.2 cm and multiple follicles cysts. I am now scheduled for a myomectomy in 2 weeks bit they Said Will remove Only one fibroid which is 1.5 cm indented to the cavity. So i wonder again if this will help. I have been on esmya for 3 months but fibroids didnt stop growing. Now i am taking Gnrh analog injections once every month and it works like esmya but will keep i updated if i get Good results. I Hope that Esmya Works for you.take Care!

Thanks Laila and Caz, good luck to you both too. Touch wood my second course of Eysma has given me some results I am please with  Take care

Hi Caz, I also have a 7cm submucosal fibroid, it's very low, impacting my cervix. It's caused very heavy periods, large clots and flooding, severe anaemia, been to hospital for 3units of blood transfused at end of August. I saw a gynaecologist today & he's suggested Esyma along with tranexamic acid if necessary. I think the position of my fibroid will prevent me from having a resection and I'm so fed up I'm favouring a hysterectomy to be honest as I'm done having kids, I'm 39. I just wondered if you'd mind updating me on how Esyma works for you as submucosal fibroids are comparatively rare.... I hope you get good results and soon X
