Hello I'm 44 and have recently been diagnosed with a 11cm Fibroid, my Gyno has put me on Esmya to try and shrink the fibroid, I just wondered if any one could me advice or their review as its fairly new treatment and can't find anyone who has tried it.

Thank you

I am 43 and have a 9 cm (now 7cm) Fibroid.  First of all, you CAN have a baby with a fibroid (I did and it was about 5 cm).   The only issue is that it can be more difficult to get pregnant as it is sometimes in the way and if it grows a lot during the pregnancy, then it could potentially block the way out for the baby (depending on where it is), and you might need a c-section.  Other than that, it doesn´t cause any problems.  I have had my fibroid for 7 years (they detected it when I was pregnant with my 7 year old).  It stayed the same for a long time, but has recently grown.  I took Esmya for 3 months, and at first my period was still extremely heavy (the first two months).  By the third month, it was very light.  I did have some severe cramping at times and only had to take ibruprofen once to help with the pain.  I had bad gas the first few days, a terrible headache, and I was extremely tired (that lasted about a week).  Now I get really bloated sometimes and my faces flushes red.  I gained weight as well (about 2 kilos), but I´m not really fatter...just heavier. It´s very weird.  I exercise 4 hours a week (high aerobic), so I am in good shape.  I tried to shrink the fibroid naturally at first by eating lots of veg and taking supplements like onagra, but it just grew.  I do believe sugar is really bad for fibroid growth, so if you can limit the amount of sugar you consume that might help. I am now off of Esmya fo 2 months and will start again in February for another 3 months.  The fibroid had shrunk a little after 2 and a half months of Esmya, but not much (from 9 to 7 cm).  We are now seeing if it will shrink more so I can just have a myomectomy instead of a hysterectomy.  By the way, I have heard that if you don´t keep your ovaries during a hyserectomy, then you will go into immediate menopause with all of those side-effects.  I am in Spain, and initially they were wanting to take EVERYTHING out to make things convenient in the future (in case I ever got ovarian cancer).  I don´t even have that in my family, so I figure I´ll cross that bridge when I get to it!  Therefore, if I get a Hysterectomy, I am definitely going to keep my ovaries if possible.  My doctor told me that Esmya is a hormone, so it´s normal for you to feel emotional, etc. If you want to have a baby, I would also maybe look into other homeopathic treatments as you have nothing to lose.  Accupuncture, etc. might do something.  I haven´t tried, but since 12 cm is quite large, then it might be worth looking into other ways to ¨help¨ shrink it.  There is a good book by Brandon Bays called THE JOURNEY which is a true story about a woman who naturally got rid of her basketball sized fibroid.  She had a lot of support and was an expert in that sort of thing though, so I´m not saying it´s going to work!  It´s just an inspiring story.  I have heard that Esmya starves the fibroid of the nutrients it needs, but I also read on this forum that how much the fibroid shrinks varies from woman to woman.  Good luck! I don´t have to think about surgery until May, but I´m NOT looking forward to it.

I have just gotten the name of an accupuncturist, and I´m going to give it a shot.  I´ll let you know if it does anything!

      Re - Acupuncture

Hi Sarah did you give acupuncture a try?   I believe it can take some time. I am also considering giving it a try and have found one. Just wondered how you got on or anyone who has tried acupuncture,

      Thanks M,

Hi, do you have no option to go NHS, if you are in the uK. i am 3 weeks off Esmya and i think my stomach is just as bloated as it was before. During and just after taking the Esmya i acutally felt like my stomach had got smaller but 3 weeks later  i really do not think it had worked. I will have my myomectomy next week so then i will know what size they are

I took Esmya for 3 months, was off it for two, and am now on it again (started in February for the second round).  My operation is this Friday.  Originally my fibroid was 9cm and it shrank to 7cm, but has not gone down from there.  My periods still came while on Esmya and were still very heavy for the first two months and then went down to a more normal amount.  There was only one month (right after I stopped taking Esmya), that I had no period, but it started again the next month and has continued since.  Initially I had a bad headache and was extremely tired (probably the first few days), but after that, I really didn´t notice any side-effects.  I have heard that it depends on the person and the fibroid, but there are some cases where people actually see their fibroids disappear with Esmya, while others see little to no shrinking.  From what I´ve read online, it looks like there tends to be a tiny bit of shrinking, but not that much.  Hope that helps.

I'm the same as you sarah43654, had no side effects and my period didnt stop at all. I took it for 6 months continuosly. My fibroiids reduced by maybe 2-3cm. The only thing that shrunk my fboids were GNRH analogue injections they stopped my period completely. But I had terrible side effects, hot flushes and depression. Had surgery in the end, and now I am just watching diet and exercising like crazy. x

How did your surgery go?  Did you have a full hysterectomy or keep your ovaries?  How has your recovery been?

It went well, its been 8 months now. I am fully recovered and doing vigourous exercises 3 times a week. All looks well. I had open myomectomy, so God willing still have ovaries, womb and everything intact.

Hi , I have been taking esmya for the past 10 days and i have been passing big clots and very heavy bleeding. I was wondering does it ease up soon...... I can't continue like this because I feel I can't go anywhere for fear of flooding.

      Hi Misty41

I was on esmya for 3 months in September 2014. I know how you feel right now. Not everyone experiences the initial heavy bleed with esmya but unfortunately I did and you currently are. My consultant warned me it might happen and she said it was the body just getting rid of excess hormones. The bleeding was horrendous and was pleased it stopped completely after two weeks. It was great not to have any bleeding for most of the 3 months and build up my iron and energy levels as I was on 3 iron tablets day.

Hope you stop bleeding soon and things settle down for you.

      X

      Hi Sporty chica,

You are right, in the third week the bleeding has stopped thankfully!!! Some women have said they still have a period whilst on the tablets. Like you, I am looking forward to not having any periods while taking the tablets. I hope they do shrink my fibroids but I will let you  know. Are you do to have a hysterectomy or what is your situation?

Take care and I hope things are well with you. xbiggrin

Hi misty, my situTion is that I had 2 large fibroids that were giving me serious grief. & smaller ones too. I got to the stage that I was bleeding & clotting so much during my periods that I was passing out as I was so anaemic. I had to have 3 blood transfusions too. I had no choice but to have an abdominal hysterectomy which I had in January. The main fibroid causing me problems sat right at the top of my cervix & was approx 10cm. Although I couldn't feel a difference in size my medical notes showed that fibroid has shrunk to 6cm.

My post op note also mentioned that I also has adenomyosis which would account for the severe abdominal pains that I sometimes experienced. I felt really well a couple of days after surgery, much better than I had felt in over a year. It was the best thing for me at the time.

What's your situation and treatment plan? Feel free to send a PM if you don't want to post on the forum. Xx
