Eustachian tube not opening, ears feel full, slowly losing hearing

Hi,

I've been having ear problems from September 2016 that started with some progressive tinnitus in my left ear that lead to severe hearing loss over 2 years and I'm now practically deaf in my left ear. No doctor was able to diagnose what was wrong with me and any medication prescribed didn't work. It was a hassle to go through but I eventually adapted to it. But what was weird was that I experienced pretty much no pain at all in my ear and doctors looked into my ear and said there was no problem with it.

About 4 weeks ago, I suffered an uncomfortable popping noise in my right ear while I was on a jetski. I immediately had hearing loss along with a high amount of pressure in both ears and went to a doctor for treatment. It turns out that I have severe inflammation in my sinuses and my left ear may have been preforated at some point and I have scaring in both my ears. I was given prednisone and an antibiotic which helped me to get a bit better after a week. But a week after that, it started again with a high amount of pressure and immediate hearing loss. I felt liquid going down my ear and couldn't unblock my Eustachian tube but I didn't experience any pain apart from the discomfort of the pressure in the middle ear. It's been just over a week since then and I've suffered progressive hearing loss each day. Doctors believe I have chronic Rhinitis and Eustachian tube dysfunction and have given me nasal sprays but they aren't working at all and I can't get an appointment with a consultant until October as they're fully booked. Does anyone have any advice on how I can at least reduce my symptoms?

Hi Degan. I am sorry for what you have had to go through so far. I have been diagnosed with ETD too but sounds like you've had a worse experience with it all. I am the opposite to you, my hearing is ok abit muffly at times but I have constant ear pain in both ears. The only thing that is helping me is a nasal spray called Dymista prescripted by a doctor. It keeps the pain under control. I take antihistamines everyday. A friend of mine has ETD but more sinus related and the doctors told her to use a facial steamer to help clear the sinuses 3 times a day. I hope this helps and the symptoms get better.

      Hi shez,

I've been taking dymista for the last week now but it seems to have not much effect. Although, I have been seeing some improvement from taking nasal decongestant tablets so I'm going to continue taking those and I'll also have a look at the facial steamer.

I've been on Dymista for over a year now and it took a good few weeks before it started to help me. Give it abit more time and hopefully it might start to work for you. Good luck 😃
