Evening leg pain

I am 4 weeks post op and have had daily problems with pain beginning around dinner time. It is in the front of my femur. I do so well all day and then pain creeps in to the point I do not sleep. I don't take medicine during day I don't need it. I learned I had a fracture during surgery and wonder if that is it? Also they used a larger implant than what they used on the right hip last year. Anyone heard of that?

See dr in 2 weeks but you all seem to know more😊

I also do not need pain meds during the day but I do take it overnight as my pain increases late in the day & sleeping as well. I'm anxious to get active so I am trying to stay real active and working the muscles most of the day-- they (the muscles) and I am wiped out and sore overnight.

Consider overnight medication. Might be worth it to keep you fresh each day. Good luck.

You need to remember that THP is major surgery. Not only are you recovering, you are correcting months of incorrect walking. Muscles are already traumacized and now they are being asked to do double duty, correcting and recoverin. Old school recovery is wok work work those muscles but new thinking is gentle progress strengthening and stretching gently and a day of rest inbeyween. If groin pain and femur pain develop or persist, working thru THR pain only injures those muscles and ligaments more. Your workouts should only progress to uncomfortable, then rest. I know it sounds like laziness but think about how you treat a sprained ankle. You don't walk on it, you rest it

Post hip activity is the same, you should listen to your body at least as much as the advice of doctors and physical therapists. If it hurts that is a signal to take it easy. Pain is your body warning you that you are pushing too hard.

Femur pain is very common. The only thing that helps it is total rest 3-4 days, walking only when necessary (bathroom). If you are working start Friday afternoon and no walking during the weekend. Would be better to do a week but not always possible. The pain comes from correcting your gait after months of walking incorrectly, it does go away but total rest is the only solutionl.

    dear jennifer,

you are 4 weeks post-op from a major invasive surgery where muscles, tendons etc. were cut, joint forcefully dislocated, bone cut and cavities reamed and sanded to fit the protheses that were hammered in place  - In your case, you had a fracture and repair was needed -

A lot of healing needs to take place while you also start walking and trying to ge stronger ..

You decided to not take any medicaton during the day because you "don't need it"

However, I was told bymy surgeon to

stay ahead of the pain and not to make the mistake to wait too long to take pain medication.

By the time you’re in pain it takes a lot more medicine to control pain after it’s started as opposed to starting it ahead of time -

Maybe take medication as prescribed and decrease in increments - That will keep medication flowing through your system and your level of pain at a more even and manageable level -

Be kind to your self, jennifer and come back here any time okay ..

    big warm hug

    renee

Hi Jennifer,Its very early days. Please remember that you have had a major op. It will really take a while for things to settle down.If you have a chance to I would have a nap in the afternoon, with your pain meds.Reflexology also will help. Please rest as much as you can.And if in doubt ask your physio regards Amandah

My hip implants are different. My femur fractured during surgery as this can sometimes happen. My orthopedic surgeon said it would take 6 weeks to heal. Give yourself time. Listen to your body. I took it one day & one step at a time smile

    Hi Jennifer,

I'll be four weeks post op on Tuesday, I take paracetamol during the day but towards early evening the pain ramps up so I add codeine, my husband has been making meals ahead because I'm finding it too painful to stand around cooking the tea, its frustrating but these things take time to come back, I just take each day as it comes and think about all the things I can do rather than those I can't!

Like you I also get pain in my femur that comes and goes, its sore to touch and I notice it more when I've been more active.

The biggest thing I have learnt from having this op is its all about balance between exercising and resting, I have over done it on a few occasions then had to scale back for a few days, today for example I walked the furthest I've gone approx half a mile, I thought I would be fine but I was shaky when I got home, clearly I'd done too much so I'll walk the block for the next few days until I try it again!

I hope your recovery continues to go well, I seem to be about in the same place as you so it'll be interesting to hear what your doctor says.

    Take Care
