Ever Total relief ?

Ok so I'm almost over a bout of the thrush and bacterial vaganosis , I started using the steroid in June and have been fluctuating between feeling a bit better and very sore until I found out I had the thrush , I didn't even realise I had it until I got the curdly discharge , I must have had it since July or so ? Anyway I'm almost back to way I was before I started the steroid , my question is im totally off the steroid a week and a half now and the soreness is mild with mild burning feeling also , so how often should I use the steroid ? My doc says 2/wk because any more and I'm making myself more prone to thrush again , 2/ wk use of the steroid probably won't get rid of my burning so do I just set up with the mild burning and soreness and just keep to the steroid 2 per wk and just keep it at bay , is this how LS works ? Do you ever have total relief from mild symptoms or is There always a level of soreness to deal with ?

    Hi Wigster

So sorry you're still having problems, but it takes time before you find the regime that suits you best.

Bear in mind that it's never a good idea to stop the steroid abruptly which I guess you already know. Twice weekly applications are usually normal long-term.

My dermatologist put me on Trimovate steroid cream which contains nystatin to stop thrush and a topical anti-biotic. It's not so strong as Dermovate which I found actually made me sore.

I also use a little estrogen cream every now and then which stops any fusing, use coconut cream, or A & D ointment after every toilet visit (also water spray when things are bad), and cut down coffee and alcohol which are acid.

I hope you find a good routine, because this horrible affliction seems to affect you psychologically as well as physically and on the bad days, it's so depressing!

But don't worry, you will find a way to keep it under control.

Thanks annieflipflop , iv stopped my steroid on the gps advice because she gave me canesten hc for the thrush which I had an awful reaction to ( it burnt my skin raw ) and to let the skin heal fully she said to stop everything until it heals , it feels a lot better but I have mild burning and a slight itch which I preseum is the ls , so il go back on my steroid in a few days , just not sure weather to use it every day to get rid of the slight soreness or just use 2 wk to just keep it from getting worse , I'm so afraid of the thrush teturning from the steroid use ! Also is all the rinsing after toilet breaks and coconut oil not messing with the natural ph which in turn might cause thrush ? This all happened since I started the steroid , rinsing and coconut oil ! It's so consuming

    Hi,

This is just my opinion based on experience and on the fact that most gps know next to nothing about LS ! Also based on the fact that LS is far more problematic and serious than thrush, let the LS be your priority I say.

What is the norm is that the steroid cream should be used daily for one month rubbing in for 90 seconds then every other day for another month. After that maintenance should be once or twice a week whichever works for you but should NEVER be stopped completely. If you have a flare up go back to the every day application etc.

You shouldn't have to put up with perpetual soreness if the steroid is working though I know there are some poor souls who nothing seems to work for.

If you get thrush a lot consider looking at your sugar intake and get your doc to check for diabetes If he hasn't already.

    Hope this helps you

Hi caroline , yes iv cut out sugar as much as possible , I was using the steroid on holidays at the end of aug twice a day for a week and maybe this was too much and caused the thrush , I am going bk on the steroid in a few days when my skin completely heals from an awful reaction to canesten hc , I think I am only in the early stages on ls as its not horridly painful but some burning and itch , iv no white patches or fusing yet I hope I can stop this in its tracks and it won't get to that stage

Blimey so do i, was a bit much twice a day but it's all a learnin curve.

was wrongly diagnosed with thrush for over a year so had unbearable itching and sleepless nights and all i would be told to do was apply more and more Canesten, pessaries etc till i got a reaction to it too. I had the white patches but Dr didn't see anything past thrush! I'm sure if he had and i had been referred sooner i would not have had the skin fusion i have now. It's so depressing I agree. It DOES change your life. I've had great comfort from this forum though, knowing there are others who know EXACTLY how i feel.

I'm taking flucozenade for reoccurring thrush and still continue with clobetosol and ovestin. Thrush is understandable due to all the ointments, etc we keep hitting the area with. Everything is thrown out of balance. my gyno keeps a check on it with regular swabs. I've found when I'm taking flucozenade for a while it seems to keep LS in check and no flare ups. Down side it can affect your liver. So we keep a check on that too. Good luck

Ok Deb I was wondering how you would know you had the thrush as symptoms very simelar to ls , so swabs is a good idea , I only realised when I had the White curdly discharge and at that point my swab showed an overgrowth of thrush , I didn't realise I even had it as I thought it was just the ls , oh this condition is so hard and so emotionally draining , but hopefully I can get a handle on it and keep it at bay , thanks

Before I gave up on sex, I still got bouts of thrush. In my daily examination with my magnifying mirror, I watch for even the slightest white speck – long before it runs rampant and quantities of curdly discharge appear. So, when I see that hint, I just apply a small pea-sized amount of canesten cream (left from my last major bout). The thing is, the cure for thrush is so harsh I think it causes LS to flare up. Even the thrush itself causes LS to flare up. So, the trick is to be vigilant to prevent thrush – a pharmacist once told me it's caused by the deadly combination of sugar, stress and friction. It's a chicken/egg situation with LS. The steroid ointment shouldn't cause yeast to proliferate if you keep it out of the vagina. At least that makes sense to me.

Thanks morelle I know it's like going round in circles , I can't give up sex yet I'm only 38 so iv lots of years of soreness and thrush ahead 😁, I'm feeling a lot better now that the thrush and bacterial vaganosis is healing , iv cut out sugar as much as possible , I have a mild burning and my skin is slightly sore to touch , I'm afraid to go back on the steroid or coconut oil and baking soda rinses in case it all flares up again , at the moment I can cope with the sensations I have but I know im gonna have to do something soon !!

The thing is, if you can get it settled down, LS can go into remission for years. Pretty hard to get it settled when the friction and fluids of sex stir it up. I'm almost 64 and have had it since I was 22. It came and went (undiagnosed, untreated until 2 years ago).

I got so tired of the cycle of thrush and perineum tears in my twenties, so tired of grinning and bearing painful sex. My husband was angry all the time because I would avoid sex for weeks after having it and tearing. I was mostly celibate in that bad marriage for about eight years in my thirties, except to get pregnant twice. I had all sorts of great sex in my forties after my divorce. Probably LS improved once I got out of that tense relationship.
