Excess and trapped gas. Is it worth going to the GP?

I've had problems with constipation and general digestive discomfort for years, mainly due to adhesions restricting digestive transit and IBS. One of the main problems is the shear amount of gas I get, that is also trapped and difficult to get rid of, unless I'm alone and completely relaxed. I have to curl up on the couch to get rid of it, nothing else works. Even then it's difficult. It has being ruining my life for years, I can't socialise, go on holiday, have friends round to stay. I'm pushing my boyfriend away cos I'm in pain whenever he is around. I can't stay anywhere new, even on my own without it making constipation and trapped gas worse. Things are really bad, I'm isolated and getting down. In the last two weeks, it has somehow managed to get even worse, I'm struggling to make it through the day at work now, due to gas pain, despite getting up early in the morning, 2hrs before work to make sure I have time to get rid of gas and go to the loo. I spend all evening farting too. Is it worth going to the GP? Or do they just fob you off with advice to try eliminating things from your diet and try daft remedies like simethecone and charcoal.

I'm already on Laxido and Ispagula Husk for constipation. I've tried everything herbal and drug remedy there is and tried eliminating things, but nothing works. Only thing I've found I have to careful with is too? much products with yeast in, ie bread. Any thoughts guys?

Hi Siscosun..   Horrid experience isnt it..  Unfortunately, it occurs without warning & lingers longer than the want of..  Have you tried some old fashioned remedies?  Surprisingly, they do have an effect on the digestive intestine.   At the same time, your problem could be a symptom of many other illnesses SO a trip to your GP would be a wise move just to be sure..  In the meantime, try some pepperming tea & leave bag sit for 10-15mins..    Another remedy is a fresh ginger rood, grate & place in a cup of boiling water, add lemon or sugar to taste.   Chamomile tea, pumpkin & activated charcoal is also a 'go to' help to relieve the trapped gasses..  I really do hope that you can find some relief very soon so that you can continue on a life outside the home.    Constipation can be relieved by natural laxettes from your health shop also..    That is one of my greatest problems & usually start taking them a few days prior to staying some where for a night or 2..  Natural laxettes do not have that harsh abrupt outcome..   Do feel for you Siscosun, hope all goes well & your problem is bought to a relaxed hault smile

Forgot to mention that the only bread I can eat (may be only a slice ) is Sourdough.  it is still made in the proper wau and is proven propely so it breaks down the yeast

I started almost four years ago with excess gas and was told(by a friend) to cut out poraroes and bread which I must admit did help at the time,  At first no one listened to me as I was told it was all due to stress due to my huisband's death and my son falling in love and disowning his family.  I then found that the more fibre I ate and the more water I drank the worse I was.  I cut out cereals completely and avoid cakes, biscuits and pastries.  I was also told to eat no more than three pieces of fruit a day. We are all so different and  alot of it us down to trial and error.  I have found that exercise does help if I have a 'lazy' day I am worse than if I only walk.

Hi Sisco, I'm forever in and out of my doctors due to my ibs, they can give you stuff that will deal with this. Insist your in agony and lay it on thick, you know when you're well or not. Good luck!

Hi Sam, what can they offer you to help exactly? Curious to know before I go to the doctor's.

Thanks guys for your support. It is nice just to know Im not alone. I always think people must think I'm some sort of weirdo, as I am always alone and never have any nice holiday stories to tell, like they do. I've tried all sorts of remedies like charcoal tablets, got beano imported from the States, tried fennel, ginger, peppermint, slippery elm etc, etc as well as the like of Deflatine, nothing has helped. I do think maybe I should go to the GP as with my history of adhesions affecting the small bowel, think I could have a blind loop or something, causing SIBO. I've had two full on small bowel obstructions in the past, requiring surgery too.

I hate the way doctors tend to just shrug and say it's IBS, not much we can do but will let you know how I get on.

      Gas-Related Pain

Your symptoms are more likely to be gas-related if any of the following factors are present:

You have recently eaten gassy foods.

Your pain location keeps changing. Pain may be experienced in the upper abdomen and chest or rib cage.

You are constipated or overdue for a bowel movement.

      You are passing wind.

      Related Pain

Your pain is less likely to be gas-related and more likely to be the result of IBS problems of visceral hypersensitivity and motility if you experience any of the following:

Pain is more widespread and feels like large parts of your colon are hurting. Pain may radiate upward.

Pain is crampy or your colon feels like it is in spasms.

You feel anxious or are under stress.

I lived with trapped gas and constipation for ages, it was awful. I tried eliminating the usual suspects, dairy, glucose, etc and tried teas, etc but found no relief. Then I got a book - The IBS elimination diet and cookbook, based on low  FODMAPS... By Patsy Catsos... It changed my life. Please try it. There are very many foods and addititives that can cause horrid gas in IBS and also other conditions.

PS... I also have adhesions and was wondering if I should try a doc. I decided to give the low fodmap diet a chance first and it worked. The fact that sourdough is helpful to you makes me think it's exactly what you need.

You could try eliminating gassy vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli and brussels sprouts.  Try the Fodmap diet.  If this doesn't work, see your doctor and list all the things you have tried and have not worked.  Simethecone and charcoal do help some people.  Eliminating things from your diet is also good advice because it can pinpoint food triggers.  These are sensible things to suggest and your GP would not be fobbing you off if he/she recommended them to you.

Hi guys, just an update, went to the doctors, she didn't seem to think she could help much with the flatulence, just said I should try Omeprazole as I've started burping a lot too, more recently (flatulence is the much BIGGER problem though and much more longstanding). It only made me burp more, get more trapped flatulence and become more uncomfortable so came off it. Guess, I'll have to go again to see her (sigh!) Anyone having more luck than me?

Hey there! I recently have found that taking 400-600 mg of magnesium citrate tablets (you can find them at any health food store) helps A LOT. Take them at night before bed and it will keep you regular. I found that not being regular is a big source of the issue. I also don't eat gluten dairy or soy. Dairy and gluten seem to be the biggest issue however I have still had issues not eating any of these! The magnesium really has seemed to help though. Have had the same issues with doctors just passing off the issue with ibs and not treating the symptoms.

Hi Angie, thanks very much, I'll give that a whirl! Are there any issues with using magnesium regularly? Or is it safe. Cheers, good to have a solution from someone who understands.
